what steering box in '85 IROC? and other conundrums

i'm goin to look at a junk iroc tomorrow, it's an '85. will it have the 2.25 turn steering box? i think all irocs have one but i want to make sure.

do all 2.25 boxes have the 12ish:1 ratio and vice versa?

i'm seeing some controversy as to which box is best. i've heard it's the ones stamped with XH, Z and W. so which is best and why? i think i've seen that XH boxes only came in 91-92.

where is the Z or XH supposed to be stamped? is it right on top? the box was still in the car so i couldn't see the bottom or right side.

Yo, U.T.

I did some checking with a dealer. I didn't find a steering box that is specific to an '85 IROC, only the Z/28. A 1984 through 1986 Z/28 steering box (and by the way it is listed as 2.5 turns lock-to-lock) lists for around $300 (!). Not only that, they want a $25.00 core charge and it is a reman. However, a new, non-Z/28 steering box is about double that. Anyway, the p/n for the Z/28 box is 88991244.

gmpartsdirect.com wants $150, plus core, plus shipping for the Z/28 box.

Hello, junkyard!

My box is stamped "XH" on the cover. You can see it, it's right on top. Mine's almost worn off.
My 92 RS came w/ F41 suspension 16" wheels, etc.
I've heard this is one of the "good" boxes.

245/50-16 tires rubbing!

Hi everone,
I have a 1982 Firebird thats been going though a rebuild after an acceident last fall.

When changing out the gear box, I have the 88991244 box installed and I went with 245/50-16 tires on 16 inch wheels.

At full turn lock to lock the tires are rubbing on the front of the frame on each side.

Are there any form of stops etc that I can install to prevent the rubbing.

I went with that box because the dealer said it would be the only 2.5 turns box that would fit my car.

as far as i know you can put in any thirdgen box into your car. i had a 2.5 turn in my '87 and put in a 2.25 turn from a '91. i have the same size tires you do and they dont rub at all. they used to rub but that was because one of my tie rods was bent to hell. FYI, my old 2.5 turn box has a Z stamped on it so that means the Z doesn't mean squat.

Hi,
Thanks for your answer, but the box that was installed was brand new OEM and not rebuilt. Yes I paid a sum for it. What I would like to do in to install some king of stop either on the control arm or box that would limit the left right movement of the steering thus eliminating the rubbing. Any body have any ideals.
