TBI PROMS should be easier
TBI PROMS should be easier
I have sorta silently been studying this board and there is a wealth of info on here. The one thing that boggles me though is with the wealth of prom burning knowledge on here no one has come up with how newbie's who want to upgrade their motors and STILL USE TBI should start. I mean there is one guy saying this and another saying that. Someone should just come up and say this is what the code means and if you modify this it will do this and so forth. I would like to keep TBI but I need to change motors and with the little help I do get I do not think I am going to be able to. It just shouldn't be this hard. Sorry about this but I had to say it
Hmmm...
One reason is that TBI mods are essentially low buck
Soooo....
Not a lot of combinations are particularly well sorted
not a lot of dyno time spent.
Think in these terms...
Say your budget is 10K ... Is TBI still a logical choice ?
Say its 7.5k...
Well down around 1k there is not a lot of cash
for the kind of testing that is automatically going to
occur in 10k and up motors
Sooo... progress goes as you see it here...
A set of heads, some tuning, some track time, posting
of results and some heated arguments as to what
that data point means...
As opposed to a fresh bottom end
three sets of heads, a fist full of cams and dyno
reserved for the weekend....

Alot of things aren't easy. I'm sure that being a well-experienced military person you know that some things are complicated and that's just the way it is. It takes time to learn the ins and outs.
I was a "newbie" about 2 years ago and I had a MINIVAN. Now look at it
I do appreciate the replies from the 2 gentleman. I have roughly $3500 to spend as urbman was saying you should use a target. Now V8Astro Captain I have read the prom burning tech article and basically it says to but the stuff and play around. Well with everyone who burns on this board with basically the same combinations I would have assumed someone would have posted the particular changes made and where in the code. I just had to vent when I wrote this cause some people on here think they work for GM and do not want to give up the great secrets of the ecm and chip.
Yeah I agree it someimes seems that way...
Consider though that most folks here are pretty
smart and are well aware of the limitations of their
test methodology...
I am a bit nervy with posting "results" as our
local track shut down last year.
So ... at the moment I am trying to construct
the WB O2 instrument to have something other than
"it feels stronger" for data.
Have a little patience though, people swing through
an arc with respect to expertise...
They learn something, they get a little full of themselves,
then it dawns on them how little they actually know,
and how hard it is to move forward by themselves
Soon after they start trying to find like minded folks,
by contributing to the larger body of information.
Its the only way to attract such folks.
I suspect that all of the experts here have swung through
this arc and the rest will ... errr start soon enough

If you just read all the threads that look interesting you should be OK. I had no idea what I was doing with TBI until I started reading this board since it was (is) considered the bastard child of efi, but as of today my block is totally torn down, bottom end and all and ready for the machine shop.
$3500 will buy you a hell of a lot of stuff, everything I have cost ~$2200 with exhaust, heads, rear, etc. You could probably get a crate 350 if you wanted and slap an exhaust on it, a decent manifold, some gears, and you'll be fine.
So I guess in a round about way, all the info is there but like you said its hard to find unless you know exactly what you're looking for. Just keep searching and Im sure you'll find all the stuff you need.

Warning ! misc rambling...
One of the characteristics of other efforts similar to this one
(open source software projects)
Is that the FAQ and "users guide" is a highly valued project.
So highly valued is this portion of a project that the "core"
(elite members of the development team)
single out these guys working on the FAQ for special attention, that is, prompt detailed explanations and assistance.
The reasoning is that "inexperienced" members are likely
to spot areas that are confusing and write "better" explanations
than "experts".
Sooo...
A good way to start is to ask Traxion if your "TBI
specific rewrite" of his article is accurate, then post it
as an RFC (request for comments) you will get a lot of
excellent feedback from the experts who see it as
a chance to move the general discussion forward.
In the end you will have what you need and much more
