i remember reading somewhere that if you have more than about 40 horses, you'll need some kind of chip...
what if the car had boltons like a headers, cat, and catback, along with all new ignition, and intake manifold... would a bump in fuel pressure be enough to suit that..? at wat point do you need a custom chip?

I think some LO3s and 2.8s have more then 40 HP(it depends though you talking flywheel or rear wheel), and they still run on their stock chips.
it is not so much a matter of a certain hp gain that calls for a new chip, it is more like the stock chip is so conservative that you will hardly see any of the potential of your mods if you don't get a real custom chip done.
there are people who have made huge gains while suffering from a stock chip, but teh potential is much greater if you get it tuned correctly after your mods.
