TBI Cleaning Additive
TBI Cleaning Additive
I just bought a 1992 RS with TBI. I removed the air cleaner and used carb cleaner to clean most of the "brown crud" out. I was wondering if there was a good fuel additive I could run through the gas to clean it from the inside out.
Thanks for your help,
Mike

I found a good can of stuff called Revive... used on carbs really, but works for any other system just as well. (Cept with any efi, can't really stall it like the instructions say)
I used it on my setup and it really cleaned a lot of crud out of the block and passages. I had it tossing a code 32 egr failure on occasion and after the cleaning no code. Saved me from having to manually clean the egr with a brush and shopvac...

i wouldnt really worry about running any cleaners through it. Those injectors are tough as nails, they almost never break or clog. I took my old 305 ones off and they look good as new. Most of the other surfaces in contact with gasoline stay clean because of the additaves in gas already. Just spray around the tbi with a good cleaner and get the iac, too. That tends to gunk up as these cars get older and pass more oil past the valve guide seals.

You shouldn't need fuel system cleaner
Most of the fuel system cleaners are just high octane gas in a can mixed with some Kerosean or alcohol.
Add 1 pint of pure grain alcohol with a full tank of gas. That'll clean it out good without hurting anything. I've done it, it works well. As for the TBI itself....
Just spray the whole thing down good with some carb cleaner while its running.
I use a product by Berkible called 2+2 Gum Cutter. That crap works good.
Just make sure you spray up on the bottom of the injectors, 'cause if you had to clean brown gunk off of it, it probably wasn't taken care of much.
I would also recommend that you replace the fuel filter.(Its under the drivers side floor boards. It only cost about $20, and depending on the mileage and if they put in 87 octane, it should really sharpen up responce and power. Any questions, just email me, I have a '92 TBI and have done it all.
