Timing with these mods? 305 TBI

Hey Guys,

I really don't have a lot of mods, but I want to see what you think the best timing would be for these mods.

K&N Open element 14x3
MSD 6al+ Ignition
MSD blaster coil
8.8mm wires
Bosch platinums (gapped one step colder)
Open Exhaust (No muffler )

It's not a lot, but should I go higher than base timing?

Also my idle is 1250 IN gear, is this due to the utter lack of exhaust? When I dropped my gas tank to put in the dead fuel pump I found the muffler to have holes all over the place so I ripped it out and that made it loose at the cat as well. Other than that, I seem to have a tranny problem (65mph at 3600 RPM in 4th gear) and of this my high base idle RPM's?

Thanks guys

James

I would say anywhere from 8 to 12 degrees of advance. Also I've heard that the msd/bosch platinum combo isnt a good choice. Both by themselves are great but when combined cause fouled plugs.

You would get a better gain if you made your fuel pressure regulator into an AFPR or adjustable. Bump up your fuel+hotter spark from timing and your ignition mods= more power. There is a tech article on this, check it out it's pretty easy.

Cool. Thanks for the advice. What do you think is a better plug... I am putting new plugs in Tuesday, which is when I am messing with the timing. So advice on plugs would be great, also what degree would you suggest gapping those plugs?

I am thinking of getting an AFPR from turbocity.com (they are right down the street from me, about five minutes) and installing that.

Saying I buy the AFPR tomorrow, what would be your recommendations for the gap, timing, and PSI of the fuel pressure?

Thanks

James

Good choice, I havn't heard to many good things about MSD ignition as far as major HP/ Torque gains.. especially with the LO3. I'd also stay away from open exhaust with no muffler.. Way to loud and maybe too much back pressure loss... I've started the car up with just the cat on and it litterally rumbles the floor board at just idle.. BIG *** magnet for cops in my opinion. I'd stay with the flowmaster man. Just my two cents. Spark plugs.. I use AC Delco Rapid Fires.

As far as timing goes, it's all up to your own vehicle. Each one will react differently to different timing so play around with different numbers and get the one that's right for you.

As far as plugs, I run bosch platinums but I don't have the msd ignition so it works well. I would try the new Denso Iridium plugs or NGK has a new iridium plug for alot less money. I've seen a few tests with these new plugs and better ignition being applied with a good gain in power. Put atleast some 8mm wires on with those plugs though. As far as gapping I think gm recommends .35 i might be wrong though. If your willing to spend the money on the AFPR go for it but you can do it for free with a drill press. With my timing i just adjusted it while listening to the engine until it kinda fell on its ***. Then went back a couple of small turns. Remember to run higher octane gas with advanced timing. The trick is to find where the best common ground is between octane and timing.

I decided to go with timing that worked the best with 89 octane. It ran a little smoother on the street and costed alot less.
