ok I need to do something. coming home on the pike last night I was behind my brothers 91 Z28 TPI 305 five speed. Well He kills me up at top end. I have an auto wich does not help! but I am still picking up speed while I am deep into red line. I am affraid the motor will blow if I hold it too long. and it does not stay OD at WOT. We basicly have the same mods except he changed his cam and some of his intake so he has a big advantage there. We both have 3.73's for gears also. I am getting a 350 next year but now running him on the high way I think I want a six speed!! What do you guys think? Should I do a six speed swap when I do my motor? is it worth it for all around performance?

put a corvette servo in that trans and it will stay in overdrive at WOT. Have you had a chip burned that bypasses the 108-115mph speed limiter? Also, drop in a $50 LT1 cam in that TBI car and you should be able to stay pretty tight with that TPI car.

The vette servo does nothing for preventing shifts into 3rd from od. It only helps make shifts firmer. The kickdown valve is part of the valve body and it must be replaced to prevent kickdown or at the least altered so that 4th to 3rd kickdown is prevented.
You won't be able to get high rpm out of a tbi with the stock cam, the rpm range for the stock cam is roughly 4000 rpm hp peak then it's got nothing after that.

it doesn'tauto vs stickl is an old argument and track results show that they both have their plus's and minus'. tha tis not where your issue is if you wanna beat him. if he has changed his cam you are not even close to having equal mods. the cam is the worst part of most stock small blocks, ours being about the worst ever. if he has replaced teh cam in his car and he is only taking you at high speeds you shoudl be very proud, he should kill ya all the way from the line to the end of the track.

get the lt1 cam and get the 3-4 upshift kit from summit it replaces the tv valve in the trans and alows the tranny to stay in fourth past half throttle which the stock one doesnt alow. and the cam will help make top end power so the car will still pull at high speeds.
I would do the cam but I think I am just going to drop in that new vortec motor. Now I am thinking of going to a six speed. I am not sure if it worth it???
I am getting a 15.6 in the quarter and my bro's best time is 14.3. He does have a huge advantage with his cam change and new intake runners, and the five speed.

the 5-spd has nothing to do with his et's. on a quarter mile equally prepared cars an auto will be quicker off the line cause they are easier to launch and the stick will run a greater mph because standard trannies are more efficiant. all in all a *** stick driver vs an auto will most often be a draw.
a 6-spd will not change teh difference in your et's. making more power and getting it to the ground will.

I swapped to a T56 6 speed finally(expensive project). If I had it to do over again, I would have used that money to buy a vortech 350HO. If you have the money to do both though, do it. The closer gear ratios of a manual are really sweat!! NJ Speeder is right. Quarter mile times won't change too much. It's when you're already driving and someone pulls up on you that makes it so much fun. You have more gears to stay in your powerband. And with 3.73s, you'll still have good pull in fifth gear and have the six gear for cruising.
