TBI Combination for Lowend Torque

I know that a Suburban may not fit in here but my other cars are Z28s. I have the chance to buy a roller 350 standard bore with new pistons, etc... The guy said that he would throw in the LT1 camshaft also. I would like to put this motor in my Suburban for towing. I currently have 3.08 gears, headers, single 3 inch exhaust, K&N filter, and Accel super coil. I will be running the cast iron heads off my 1991 Z28 and maybe a performer intake with the tbi adapter. What can I expect from this combination? Is there a cheap roller cam that I can step up to? I have a set of 3.42 gears that I will be upgrading to in the future so do not let the 3.08 gears scare you. Any input would be appreciated. BranZ

How bout a high torque camshaft with the intake closing late thus giving power up top for a great powerband. I have a 560 TBI on a L6 with this camshaft and it's awesome! Loads of grunt down low and once it hits 3000 RPM it kicks into hyper mode. Just my 2¢

The LT1 cam is pretty good for low end grunt. I'd stick with it if I were you. That's if you are going with 3.42 rear gears.

The LT1 put out 345 lb.ft. of TQ at ~3400RPM IIRC. That's pretty hefty pulling power. Anything much bigger than that cam is gonna sacrifice low end, which is what you don't want.

It may not hurt to step up to a little higher torque converter also. A few companies make them specifically for RV/Towing.

And tell the guy not to throw it in. He could knick one of the cam bearings.

LT1 with a converter should make for an impressive towing beast. Make sure and run good tranny cooler with high stall converter if your are not already.

I ran a LT1 cam L05 in my 92 GMC truck and towed cars behind it all the time (I had a car plague for a while). The LT1 cam does produce slight less torque below 2000 rpm but if you run a 2000 stall converter it will make up the difference and then some. The 3.42 gears will also help. I changed my truck from 3.08 to 3.42 when it was almost new. I wish I had gone 3.73 since the tires on the trucks are much taller than those on these Camaro's. Especially with the LT1 cam giving a much higher rpm range. My L05 ran out power past 3500 rpm with a yellow line of 4k and red at 4.5k. The LT1 cam it would pull to 5500 rpm ( I did change my valve springs too). I didn't push it farther since the truck tachs end at 5000 rpm.

Point of the story, LT1 cams run GREAT in TBI engines. You will just need to add a few goodies to take full advantage of the cam.
