Just got car back, got 3.42s installed got a few questions???
Hey whats up guys just got my car back from tranny shop after getting slp diff and 3.42s installed. The mechanic wanted me to find out if the speed sensor needs to be changed to fix the spedometer. Or just the appropriat driven and drive gears put in. Also part numbers for them... One thing i noticed right away with the gears with light trottle it reves up to 2,500 rpms then shifts into second(a lot harder of a shift too)-with the 2.73s with light throttle i could have it shift into second at 1,500 rpms. Does this all sound right.

How is highway driving? I was going to get 3.23s, but I'm worried I won't get a whole lot more bang ove my 2.73s. Let me know what happens to your gas milage after you use up a tank.

sounds like you TV cable is alittle off, search transfixleo for instructions on how to adjust it. Go to www.700r4.com , they have a speedo gear calculator, just enter your tire size and gear ratio and it will set you up with the correct drive and driven gears

Gunny,
Go w/ the 3.42's. I just did the swap recently. I counldn't decide between the 3.42s and 3.73s, but I'm glad i went w/ what i did b/c i do some much highway driving. But i think you'll be disappointed w/ .23s.

ok cool just found out from nj dont need to change the speed sensor just the drive and driven gears. The gears are pretty good on highway the speedo is off for now but i know with 3.42s at 70 ure at like 2200 rpms not too shaby. Total instal for the gears, posi, + gear oil and posi additive = 425 Definitly alot but i got it done by a prof gear installer at a wel known tranny shop. Wanted it done right the first time so new future problems wiht it.
posi+gears+kit+ heavy duty diff cover+ install
100 + 200+ 90 + 130 + 425+shipping = around 1000
hahahaha damn im broke now hahahaah

The reason its shifting at higher RPM's at part throttle is because the govenor is setup for your old gears. It doesn't have anything to do with the TV cable.
If you want it to shift the way it did before the swap, you'll need to get a govenor from a 3.42 equipped car. OR buy the the B&M govenor recalibration kit.

I have the factory option 3.23 in my 99 TA and the 3.42 in my 91 Camaro. On the highway you can't tell the difference really. I like my 3.42 and I still get 26+ mpg on the highway. I did readjust my TV cable to get somewhat of a normal shift and I changed the torque converter lockup in the chip to 45 instead of 34 stock because the car will run in overdrive at 30mph and the car just lugged along in town. With my headers and exhaust giving me a little more upper rpm range I would like to play with my governor to give me higher WOT shifts but haven't had time to mess with it. I also debated on putting V6 governor in the tranny since they came with 3.42 gears and had a higher redline than L03 which would give me the higher shift rpm at WOT that I want too. Too many other projects going on.
SO GET 3.42 GEARS and POSI and you will be happy. Oh and don't forget to change your speedo gears in tranny or you will be driving about 15mph off on your speedo.

I wouldnt suggest doing it on ure own, u also need special tools. If u go to cheap shop they can prob do it in 3-4 hours 180-240. But i wanted it in pefect they guy i go to when installing it if the gears arent in the way he likes he he'll put em in again to there in perfect.

Would definitely not recommend do it yourself. I have done it twice hiring a GM mechanic on the side to actually set the backlash and pinion depth. Well worth the $50 for his hours worth of work to set my gears.
Jegs or summit sells the B&M recalibration kit. Don't remember which one.

So it would be cheaper to take the rear end out myself and take it to a shop? I know a guy that got a 3.73 gear put in a mustang and it only cost him 50$ granted he didnt need a posi carrier installed. Ive been trying to find a posi rear but Ive had no luck. If i had a way to cleveland i could get a posi rear from a 91 z for 100$...it would need a steeper gear tho.

IMO they robbed you

If you could find a GOOD repair shop that will charge the actual labor and not the "by the book" time then you can disassemble the rear your self and take them the housing and the carrier with new gears and pay them to put the gears back in. Then you can put the axles and cover back on and put the rear back under car when you get home. Just make sure and put the main carrier bearing caps back on the rear the exact same way because the 2 can be machined differently. That should save you a few hours worth of payed labor and axles and such can be removed easily by the do-it-yourselfer. You may also get lucky and catch one of the GM mechanics on the side to stop by your house and just set the gears for you like I did and not have to remove the rearend. I just had the bare rear waiting for him to come shim everything up. I gave him the carrier and (newand old) pinion so that he could press my bearings on ahead of time.

I definitely advise gettin this combo if ur gonna change ur rear ... i had an open end rear with 2:73's and its like a whole different car! These gears are SO awesome, i have never chirped this much ever lol ... and my first to second shift is SO hard!
I cant wait to get a new time at the track, hopefully its a lot faster then my stock 15.8 lol
