Tbi?

Does anyone know of a good place to learn about the differences between TBI, TPI, does TBI use a carb. Also how can I tell what mine has its a 91 RS and I'm not sure what it is. I'd like to learn more about cars but I'm having trouble finding good reading material.

Thanks

Hi! Welcome to Third Gen.If your air breather looks like its a carb.chances are it's TBI as long as no put a carb on it.Take the breather off and you will see two injectors if not then its a carb. This web site has all the info you will need because it's the best site.

TBI is a throttle body (a thing on top of your engine) with two holes through it (1 11/16" bore each) and throttle plates in the middle of the holes. Just above these holes sit two injectors where fuel is sprayed from into the engine. A good picture of a TBI throttle body assembly can be found by going to the link in my sig for the registry.

TPI looks like a metal spider humping your engine

A Carburator is....a carburator

(sorry I don't know how to describe a carburator )

Is your camaro an RS? What year is it? Is it a V8 or a V6? These all play roles in what sort of injection system you have

Yours is either a tbi or a mpfi 3.1. Both are slow but the 305 definatly has more potential then a v6. The v8 has the same looking air cleaner as the carb'd cars.

teh best way to get started learning about your car woudl be to look through the FAQ adn tech articles, then look through teh archives of this board.
your car has tbi. it is a system that the application works sort of liek a carb, ti is a wet flow manifold design. but the fuel and timign control is all electronic.
