Redesigned RAM air setup

Ok I built myself a custom RAM air setup a few months ago and was quite pleased with the result. Running on highway showed an incredible improvement. 1/8 pedal travel was necessary to maintain speed and made the WOT issue in fourth, not an issue. Basically with the ram air, I was able to max the engine out in fourth gear without having to floor the pedal. At anything less than WOT, the ECM relies on sensor readings to maintain fuel ratio. This wasn't the intent though as on track, there showed a marked improvement (3 mph difference) with the ram air, and without it.

The design followed hijacking a fog light box as a scoop, routing a shopvac tube from the scoop through a headlight wire passage behind the highbeam light and to the thermac arm. All the while, the whole setup was sealed tight, even with silicon, to make it a true ram air scoop.

Well I tore the thing to shreds today

After looking at Kevin's dual snorkel invention utilizing the TPI intake and the side thermac arm, I rethought my design.

I came up with the following design and implemented it today using an intake ripped off a V6 Camaro.

I now have a shorter distance to the thermac arm, both fog light boxes are used as scoops and I'm still working out the sealing issues, but basically I'm force feeding two fog light boxes worth of air into the intake, hopefully a good improvement over my initial design.

Slade...that will be much better than your shopvac set up for sure, I am confident of it. But in the cold weather, why not just run an open element?????

You saw that "spaceman" setup I had rigged up, right? Well Not that much diff between the two (Open vs. the ram air setup), but a huge difference over the stock aircleaner etc.

Depending on how much work it is with the above It may not be worth it till the hot summer days, just my 2cents!

My brother did the same thing for his '88 IROCZ and it works like a charm.

you guys are missing something. the snorkle on the stock air cleaner is TOO SMALL to flow as much as you want, and the ram air is never going to yeild any more than 1-3% increase at most and thats at speeds over 100mph. you gains im sure are seat of the pants, and mph and times are from other factors.

Dont think so. Couple years ago some guys with TPI cars were doing some experimenting with the ducts below the filters to the fog light area, and there is a difference with and without the ducting. Even having the foglights or filters in makes a big difference. I personally think the filters are too small, but you guys wont be using them anyways.

it seems to me the big restriction on the tpi stype intake is really where it goes over the radiator shroud. that set up gets really flat and narrow as it passes over, that is on top of the weak filter size involved.
because of these two huge restrictions i am a bigger fan of large tubing adn filter fender well cold air setups. the air is cooler and more free flowing through a 3inch single tube than tryin to ram it down from a pair of 4 inch openign into a single 2.5 inch opening.

I do agree with that. Its not much different than the mail slot on Firebird TPI cars. I measured it before, but forgot how tall that opening was. 1/2" comes to mind. Its fairly wide, though. Also, guys are running well into the 12's and even 11's with that intake setup, so it cant be all that bad, right?
