Heres my plan........

Im rebuilding my 305 in about a week. Im guessing about $500 for the rebuild kit I'd also like to throw in a Lt1 cam and the world tourqer heads.. and then towards the end of x-mas break swap my gears and do some exahust work. here' s my questions .. after these mods will my car still be able to be a daily driver? has anyone else done this combo? how much did it cost and how much did you gain? i want to keep the 305 just because i want the challenge. this will be my first engine rebuild what do i need to look for in a kit? any help would be great! thanks

1989 305 tbi 178,000 miles
automatic
flomaster
tbi mods
pretty stock otherwise..... for now

It can be your daily driver easily. A lot of places like summit and jegs sell rebuild kits for a stock 305. The cam and heads and gears will give you a pretty nice gain.

there is a pretty complete kit on summit it says "8:39:1 with 64cc heads".. if i remember the world heads are 58cc will this kit still work out but produce a different compression? also will the cam bearings in this kit work out with the lt1 cam?

I'm not knocking Summit or anything like that..... OK?

But there are three sites you should check out first before you buy a kit.

www.enginekits.com

www.pawinc.com

www.northernautoparts.com

They've got great prices for the same products.

PAW doesn't have an online catalog, but if you send them $5.95, they'll send you a 1200 page catalog. It's about the size of a small pillow. I usually read it in bed, but the damn thing about crushes my chest after a while. :sillylol:

The other two have online catalogs, so you should be able to find everything easy.

You probably don't want to hear this but........ keep in mind that by the time you pay for all the machine work and parts you'll have easily spent enough to buy a rebuilt 350.

Do it yourself and save

My stock pistons/rods/crank were fine so by the time I got the machine work done (hot tank, honed, crank checked/balanced), new cam bearings, rod bearings, crank bearings, and rings i only had about $300 to rebuild it. Plus putting the bottom end together is the fun part!

You may want to consider something like this:

http://chevy-350-engines.com/chevy-engine-246.html

By the time you rebuild that 305, you can just buy this.

But, if you decide to stick with the 305, good luck with it. I hope it turns out well for you.

I am with Knoxbonnie on this one. Just a minor change. I would go with http://www.chevy-gas-diesel-engines....ngine-249.html instead. The Vortec heads are well worth the additional money. Throw in the LT1 cam and your good for over 300hp.
