ZZ4 anyone having luck with stock 350??

I have been doing a search of the boards and keep seeing the ZZ4 swap and people saying that it is just a tad to big for a 305 with stock chip. What about with a 350?? Will the extra cubes help balance it out? Many of ya know that I am about to do a cam swap in my LO5 and am just pondering cams. I want to get into burning proms but I am not there yet. Been reading just havent bought the stuff yet. So basically I am wondering if I could get away with the ZZ4 without the chip mods streetably for a long time till I get my feet wet in burning. In about 6 months I will be going to the vortec heads modafied from SDPC but for now it will be the stock LO5 heads. Thanks for any input.

Not 100% sure what you are asking but I have swapped out my old 305 with a 350 from scoggin dickey. It is a performance TBI motor. They rated it at 300hp. I am using an aftermarket chip in the 305 computer and it still isn't running perfect. It runs lean on cruising speeds. It does good at WOT though. I am working on getting a custom chip made. I had to change out the TBI and put in bigger injectors. Is this what you we're looking for?

ZZ4 is a good cam for a 350 but it does require a lot of chip tuning to make it run right. It was designed for a carb so its not as EFI friendly as cams with a higher lobe separation.

Sorry that I wasnt clearer, I had been online for about 3 hours doing searches. My bad. My basic thought was that I am interested in beefing up my LO5 truck motor and I was thinking of the ZZ4 cam for it. What I was getting at was that the 305 crowd was saying that it was just a tad to big for the stock computer to run. I was wondering if the 350s added cubes would tame it up to run decent on a stock chip till I got into burning. I have the desire to do it just not the funds yet. I need to do the timing chain in my motor so it seems like a good time for the cam swap ya know. I guess that the cam is to big and that an LT1 or LT4 cam is the way to go. Thanks alot for the help guys. I really appreciate it.

How could it run lean at cruise? That's with learn control enabled? With the help of the O2, the ECM should be keeping the mixture right at stoich, which is around 14.7:1, A/F. If that's your definition of lean, then....

Well I have a air/fuel mixture gauge and when I am just cruising down the road it drops all the way down to the lowest reading and it stays there until I give it more gas then it kicks up.

Its way big for a stock chip. I know from experience. But if you let the stock chip be a limiting factor you wont get to far. Take the plunge and get into prom burning, you'll be glad you did down the road.

The plunge is coming just a matter of when!! Im in the military and looking at the possability of changing sides of the country and I sure cant have fubared the truck. If I stay here then I will order all prom toys in about 2 months. If I relocate then it will be 6-8 months. Just the question of money and time. By the way thanks for the info on the cam.

If I could do things over I would have got into prom burning first and got comfortable doing it, then changed cams. IMO most people would get the cam they really wanted if they were allready set up to do chip tuning. I realize you need to change your timing chain, and it would be nuts to have to tear it back apart later when you are that close. Is it possible to to put it off for awhile?
Another benfit of chip tuning is being able to fine tune your timing curve. The ZZ4 cam needs alot more timing to get all the power out of it.
What ever you do, good luck.

AND THANKS FOR SERVING OUR COUNTRY!!!!

Hat's off to joker for recognizing 1slow60's service to our country. I reflect the same appreciation. I think someone should get into the business of offering these services. (chip) It would be a thriving business. I don't have a lap top or the know how but it is a good thing.

Thanks for the appreciation guys. I too need a lap top but I do have one of those cheap scanners from autozone and I hope that it will get me through for a while once I get the stuff for the prom burning. That or I will have to make about a 100' cable to hook to my computer in the house LOL.
