where's your timing, and getting at the hold down???

car was acting funny, so i checked the timing. on the emissions label, it calls for 0º TDC. mine's around 10º BTDC at idle. where's yours? i was thinking 8º BTDC would be a good starting point, so...

i was going to adjust it, but how the frick do you get the dist hold-down bolt loose? i can't get a socket on it using an extension and u-joint, and can't get a box wrench down in there either... >:-|

FWIW, that wasn't the problem. the wires came loose from one of the injectors. (see other post)

ha ha....that little bolt can be a bit of a stubborn one unless you have the proper wrench, a couple of months ago I finally broke down and went out and got one, they are ususally available from any parts/tool place.

I got a cool little socket that looks like an open end wrench and just put a nice long extension on it. Worked great with the stock manifold!

A crowfoot should work.

ah! crow foot, didn't even think of that. i've been needing a set anyway, sounds like a good excuse to buy.

so what about the timing setting?

thanks.

Mine seems to respond best with timing set at 2 degrees BTDC.

I also got good results at 2° or 3°. But I set it to 0° for a trip and got about 4mpg better than I usually do on the highway so I've left it that way since.. hehe.

if its near stock then 10 will be too much for one of the later cars. Youll probably get a flaky idle and detonation with too much base time. i dont even know what mine is. Its so far of the pointer that i cant tell... maybe 25 deg btdc? Oh... ive also found that an old boxend wrench cut in half works quite well to lossen and tighten the bolt.

Make sure that 10 degrees is with the tan/black wire disconnected. A lot of people run 6-8 degrees advanced on here.
