I'm just starting to do mods to my 92 305 camaro. Wondering the best intake manifold to get..thanks
Supreme Member
Best manifold for most TBI guys has been the Edelbrock Performer TBI its a direct bolt on and will give you good power for a 305 that you're just starting to mod. Many guys will also throw in an LT1 cam when they have the intake off to change, just a suggestion.

I gota agree on the performer TBI manifold, however you would notice more gain if you started on the exhaust side first. These cars respond well to headers and a complete 3" exhaust .
thanks... yea, i agree. I am trying to save the exhaust for last, because i don't want an exhaust and lose every race. lol
Gears and posi, gears and posi, gears and posi, gears and posi.
If it were my car I'd do gears and posi
But to anwer your question, go with the Performer TBI. About the closet thing you'll ever get to a bolt on!

I second that. Go with Edelbrock, I've had nothing but PROBLEMS with my holley 300-66.. All sorts of re-routing and in the end, holley machined it wrong at the factory.. Totally broke my hopes of modding my LO3 further. I'm seriously considering the Grand Prix GTP.Originally posted by Chuck!

So your saying to go with my drivetrain instead of engine mods?Originally posted by Chuck!

I also have the Edelbrock and am very happy with it so far.
I was wondering if the intake runners are the same size as the intake passages on stock heads? And if not has anyone done any massage work to their intake to increase the flow numbers?

92camaro44, I also agree with Chuck! on that one about gears. If you only have some slight modifications done to your engine you're going to be disappointed when you put the intake on there because I don't think you'll feel a big difference. Before you do the intake you'd probably be better off getting the gears and posi in 3.42's or 3.73's people seem to like both and also get a full 3" exhaust (headers, cat, and cat-back). Then after that's done I'd go with a cam and intake done at the same time. That's just the way that I would approach it and it seems to be the most accepted progression on this board.

92camaro44, gears and posi are a great and often overlooked first mod for our cars, as i drive a 91 RS.
with a lower gear (higher number/ratio) you will be faster off the line, and your top speed will be compromised minimally, considering you are still using your T-5 (yours is manual, yes?)...btw, you can swap for a 6 spd (T56) from a 93-96 camaro for the extra gear. A T56 will bolt right in, no mods, other than your crossmember.
If my memory serves me right, your rear-end is using 3.08...pretty mild. Id jump to a 3.73 if you plan on keeping it pretty much for your daily driver or maybe a 3.42
As for the posi....stock camaros notorious for the one-wheel peel
kinda nice to lay 2 tracks instead of one.
If you do the rearend first, you will really feel the impact of your mods from then on. one more thing, if not the rearend, do the exhaust before the top-end. Your engine will breath better and you wont win many races anyhow if your engine cant dispel the fumes it makes, quick enough.

There is no sense in moding a moter if you cant get the power to the pavement. So get the gear's and posi first

Then do your suspension.
That's my progression anyways. First I get the drivetrain done, then the suspension and exhaust at about the same time. Then play with the intake and internals. . . unless of course you want to put in a 350, then your car will be ready for the transplant.

im also modifying my little 305 tbi a little bit and i was wondering what brand of gears and posi is recomended or does it matter and also how hard are these to install should it be done professionally or could you do it in a garage
Supreme Member
Just get the SLP posi for $100. You can get gears off of EBay for cheap. I just bought mine for $40. Gears are pretty much bullet-proof, so as long there aren't any chips in them. If you get the posi, you're going to have to 3.23's or numerically higher gears; 3.42's. . . 3.73's, etc. You also need 28 spline axles if I remember correctly, which came standard I think starting around 88 or 89. Before that, they were 26 spline.
Oh yeah, I wouldn't change gears unless you know some stuff about mechanics. I admit it, I'm not the most mechanically inclined individual on this board by far.

wel mines a 92 so if the rear ends came with 28 spline after 89 then i dshould be ok but what about doin this in a garage or should it be pro done
Supreme Member
I've always heard that gears should be done professionally unless you really know how to do them yourself. I believe certain tolerances and things have to be set exact with the gears. You're better off getting them done by a pro just to make sure they function well.

I know 90+ for sure are all 28 spline. 89 is kinda a crap shot from what I read, and before 89 its 26.
Gears are just about the only thing I'd let a shop do.

just my opinion, due to what i did first...muffler, 3" pipes, gut the gat --if you cnan do so in your state and get away with it-- or just put a straight pipe there...headers...--headers helps ALOT-- k&n filter --due to it being able to be rinsed out and used for one milion miles-- in any event i came here to figure out which intake to get now. question answered... --lt1 cam sitting on my floor-- doubt im going to put the am in though, im not a mechanic, i dunno wtf im doing on internal work....prolly get a new rear end before i bother with a cam and intake though......EVERYONE agreees, most power noticed is out of 3.73's ...super huge difference off of my 2.73's ...anyways....i gotta AIR tube thats crimped i have to deal with now before anything else....so...off to go work on my car...in the dark.....

SLOWMARO,
as for your crimped AIR tube...mine was the same way, oh how i love to bottom out. Mine was crimped just in front of the cat.
What i did was use a reciprocating saw and cut the crimp out, and replace it with about 6 in of 1/2in hose with hose clamps. Cheap, effective, and saves lots of time.

mine too, RIGHT infront of the dan cat....how i found this out was...my car was acting like i fried another plug wire, which im infamous for.....so i crawled under the car and discovered the crimp.....now how the hell do i manage cutting the crimp out?? getting to that one bolt holding the air tube on, behind the valve cover...is a pain to get to....i tried a hacksaw with the tube still on, ..no luck....look slike im gonna have to pull some afro-engineering technics again like with the header install..
Member
Slowmaro, last post i told you how i did it...Jack the car up a bit and get in there with a recip saw (sawzall) using a metal cutting blade of course...very simple....takes 30 seconds.

yeah, i noticed that after i posted....you dont have any heat issues??? no melting?? i didnt think the air tube conducted much heat but hey, ya never know.

I think it's www.SLPonline.com Or atleast it used to be. If not, just go to Yahoo and search for SLP. As far as gears go, EBay is your best bet, but occasionally they show up on here in the classifieds section. You could also try www.CamaroZ28.com

Gears are cake. All you need is a good manual and an impact. I noticed i spend more time working on the brakes and outers than the actual gears themselves.
It also gives you a chance to clean up the axle and underbody.
