Open Element
Open Element
Hey,
I'm a newbie as you can see.....
How much gain would do you get by installing an open air element to a stock 91 RS?
I ask because I see a lot of people on the board have them. Would you actually get HP gain just from having an open element?

the open element with a k+n filter will help you significantly breath, giving you great gains. i would also reccomend next doing headers and a catback

I didnt like the way the 14x3 open element over laped my coil(and I hated the look of electrical tape around my MSD coil), so I changed to a flat base 10" open element from Holley w/ a 10x3 K&N and I noticed a diffrence over the 14x3 with a paper filter.
Save your money and just put your air filter housing lid on upside down to leave a gap around the underside of the edge of the lid, then you get 50/50 snorkel air and free flowing underhood air

Does the Edlelbrock Open Element a lot of you guys use, use the stock size air filter? I currently have a K&N in my stock air cleaner, and want to go open element- but I'd rather not waste my K&N and have to spend another $40 on a bigger or smaller one.

I never tried the stock paper element in mine. I bought a K&N when I got the open element and have been happy ever since.

dont really have to buy the K&N right away. The main thing about K&N is that they are reusable, and the cleaning kit costs just as much to buy a new one.
A paper one at first will be fine cause that what most open elements come with. Then when its dirty and if you want to spend the extra money, buy a 14x3 universial K&n.

i bought the edelbrock open air element today and i definatly noticed a difference.. it looks so much better too. the only thing is i'm not a engine expert and i dont know what to do with all the little tubes that went from the tbi to the air cleaner... ever since i installed the air cleaner today my check service engine light stays on. could this be b/c of the vacuum tubes?(i think thats what theyre called)if anyone knows what i do with those post it up.

Plug the vac line/lines with a screw that will snugly fit into the hose.
and remove the air temp sensor from the stock air cleaner and plug it back up and put it off to the side some where, just make sure not to put it near the exhaust manafold. (the air temp sensor being unpluged is why your SES light is comming on)

plug the vac lines, and remove the air temp sensor from the stock air cleaner and reconnect it. you can eather drill a hole in the new air cleaner for it or just put it off to the side. but as I said b4 make sure and keep it away from the exhaust manifold. Member

Yea, I have one more question about that one. Is it the non drop or drop base air cleaner the parts stores around here only carry the Holley drop base and I already have one of them I was wanting a NON drop base. I have looked thru Jegs and Summit and it doesnt say in the description.
