torque convertor
torque convertor
i have a 1990 camaro rs with a 305 tbi. the motor was just rebuilt with:
Competition Cam 08-302-8
.05" Duration 210/220
1.5:1 Lift .480/.480
1.6:1 Lift.512/.512
Lobe Sep 112deg
flat top pistons with a bore .030 mains .001 rods .001
it has 3.42
dynomax catback
chip
and open air
the problem i am having is its a auto and the torque convertor is shifting to soon.
what convertor would be good?
and what type of hp should i be making?

maybe i didn't read this right or something but the torque converter isn't what shifts. the torque converter can be compared to a cluth in a manual tranny. i would try and find a t.c. with about a 2500RPM stall speed or around there. no idea on your HP though sorry
The tranny is shifting to soon so i need a torque converter with a higher stall. Sorry for wording it wrong. What torque converter would work best or off what car would be have had one that I could use. I read that the one off a 4cy s10 would be good. But what year s10 would be the best.

so you are sitting at a light, you give it full throttle and the car shifts too early? like say it shifts at 4000 RPMs when you rather have it shift at 5400 RPMs?

at WOT what RPMs does the engine shift at? if its shifting too early then it sounds like a TV cable adjustment to me.
so if you manual shift it everything is fine? i need a higher stall TC and manually shifting does NOT help out the low stall speed i have.

ok this is what a torque converter does-
if you hold the brake with your left foot and give it some gas with the right, the stall speed is the rpm that the engine will go to until the wheels break though the brakes and you start smokin your tires. it has nothing to do with the shift points of the tranny whatsoever

One thing no one has mentioned is the governor. This plays the biggest part as to when the tranny shifts a wot. The TV cable effects when and how hard the tranny shifts at part throttle and wot. If you have changed rear gears then the tranny will shift sooner because the governor is telling it to, the governor is accually shifting tranny at the same rpm it did before but your not going as fast as you would be with the stock gears.

You may still wish to adjust the governor. At WOT open throttle it is probably going to shift a little too soon since its tuned for an engine that red lined at 5000 rpms. That cam should redline closer to 6000 rpms. A V6 700R4 governor may make it run better and then adjust from there.
