CAN I BUY YOUR CAM??
Hey I've been looking for one for my 92 TBI. Do you still have it for sale and do you know what the specs are on it, or exactly what vehicle it came out of?
Thanks
Thanks
md, I didn't mean to mislead you. I never had an LT1 cam to sell, just trying to help out. At the time it seemed like a lot of people were looking for one. You might try z28.com, there are a lot of fourth geners over there.

Ya I saw that cam too at CP but it almost seems too good to be true. You cant even get flat tappet cams for that price.

So is this a good cam or not? would the HP gain and performance be a good choice? also would this be a good TPI cam? what about the RPM range? low, mid or high?
thanks

Dennis, the p/n from the site is 264HP. AJ said it right, its a good replacement for the L03 since it is very close to the LT1 but in order to get significant power gains from a 350 you'd need a bigger cam.

The lift is pretty lame. IMO you want at least .450 lift. 1.6 rockers would bring the intake side up to .440" ,but how many hundred $ do you want to spend for a cam and rocker combo that still is alittle smaller then a LT1 cam?

Joker makes a good point about the lift, but there's something you have to keep in mind.
That cam is perfect for somone with an LO3 and a tight budget. The duration is A LOT longer than the stock cam, and the lift is considerably more. So either way, it's an improvement over what's in the engine.
One thing this cam allows is NOT having to change valve springs, and possibly not having to cut the valve guide bosses down so the retainer-to-valve seal clearance is .050" or more.
The reason I say "possibly" is because it MAY have to be done in order to use an LT1 cam. With this cam (the $50 cam), the stock springs are easily going to be able to handle the lift, and 99.9% chance the retainer-to-valve seal clearance will be fine.
In all honesty, I'd replace the springs anyway. That's the best way to get "the most" out of a new cam. Then of course I'd get the proper springs and get the LT1 cam (which I do have BTW
). Even so, there's a pretty good chance the retainers will hit the valve seals. Of course that requires removing the heads and having the guide bosses machined down. And since they're off, might as well get a valve job and replace the seals. And I may as well have them shaved just to make sure they're nice and flat, etc. etc.
As you can see, the cost starts to add up FAST!!!
If I was looking for a quick, easy, low cost, temporary (as in "soon to be 350") mod to help wake up the engine, and the springs don't have a ton of miles on it, I'd do it with no spring change. WTF? Why not?
BTW..... Here's the specs on the stock cam, if you want to actually call it a cam. :sillylol:
305 5spd / 305 AT
GM Part #10088155*
Intake .350"/ Exhaust .384"
Intake duration @ .050" 179*
Exhaust duration @ .050" 194*
LSA 109.0*

Enough of the POS cam...
Thanks you guys for all your input. I've decided to go with the Vortec truck cam at Competition Products. It has pretty lame numbers, but, as you all said, its better than the lousy stock 305 grind.
I also ordered LT1 springs for $25 just to be sure. So for $75 I got a better cam w/springs.
BTW - Do better/newer springs give you any more horsepower - my car does have 140k mi., or is the difference so small it wont matter??
Thanks

Since the Vortec cam has longer duration, it'll want to move up in the RPM range a little.
If the stock springs are that tired, valve float will start before you get to the peak RPM range of that cam.
The cam still isn't a 6000 RPM cam, but it's the valve control that stronger (or newer) springs give that you'll feel in the SOTP meter.

I think you're making a good choice. Sometimes people get so fixed on seeing cam specs for a 350 they forget the fact that what's mild in a 350 isn't so mild in a 305.
i have a question, i'm about to buy the LT1 cam for my stock LO3. i'm purchasing it from
http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...d=989&pid=8353
would i need to get valve springs? or could i just buy the cam and install the cam itself? thanks guys.

I suppose you could use the same valve springs, but you would be much better off just getting some new ones that support higher lift. Your's are worn out now from all the years and miles, new ones are not very expensive and are good insurance. Just buy some new springs.

hmm, what about the computer? I thought, you have to burn a custom chip when u want to use a new cam...to get the most out of it.
and wouldn't it be a good idea to also replace the manifold?
and what will be the gains (cam, rockers, springs)?
and the last question: what would happen if I would put some i.e. world product heads in. would this work together?
