305 tbi on the dyno

went to the fbody gathering this weekend. almost no 1st and 2nd gens, a few 3rd gens and a ton of 4th gens. also one really well endowed tan woman walking around in a string bikini. not sure why, but i wasn't complaining.

went over to atlanta chassis dyno for their fbody gathering special. 3 pulls for 50 bucks. really nice guys.

attached are my runs (hopefully) 161 ground-pounding hp and 253 stump pulling ft. lbs torque! whoo!

how much power do you lose at the rear wheels with a manual trans? i think the l03 made 170 hp (flywheel) stock. mine has a msd 6a ignition, ultimate tbi mods, k&n filter, aftermarket catalytic converter and a flowmaster cat-back system.

replaced the egr valve last week to get it to pass emissions, but only went from 12-14 mpg in town after doing it. at 80mph on the highway, it gets 24mpg. from reading what others post on here, i'd hoped for better.

it's amazing how early this thing runs out of air. peak torque at 2900 and hp just goes flat after 4000. the sharp dropoff at 4680 rpm is where the rev limiter goes off. i thought the factory setting on a 305 tbi was 5500?

You probably hit the stock speed limiter at 110 mph on the chassis dyno. I don't think there is any rev limiter stock (can be added in the chip), I've seen 6500+ rpm before. Generally I'd say people add 15-17% drivetrain loss for a manual car. Those are good numbers for a 305 TBI, probably better than average.

I made 178 rwhp and 271 rwtq with headers, cat-back, and k&n. I think the peanut cam is the big limiter on why the car runs out of air.

Pretty similar huh?

Just goes to show you how bad the stock top end of these 80s designed corporate smogger motors is. I still have a hard time believing where that rev limiter is... that's total crap. Maybe you hit the speed limiter like Beast said. Even if it's not gonna pull at all up that high you should be able to flog it if you want to! You have to admit though, it's that low tourqe peak that makes the LO3 feel it's getting you somewhere fast

Harry

speed limiter sounds right. was in 4th gear.

that low torque peak is nice for fun, everyday driving, but if i want to stay in the torque curve at the track, it looks like i'm going to have to shift at around 4000 rpm!

Those are some good #'s, but I dont think you need to shift that early. Sure, your torque drops off, but torque doesn't play that big of a roll other than off the line. Your hp curve is fairly flat and hardly drops off at all. You should be shifting as far into your hp peak at possible. Doing this won't drop your rpm's as much during the shifts either.

The L03 does not have a rev limiter from the factory. What you hit is the speed limiter. I hit it the first time my RS was on a dyno.

Dynolab broke my last project when it was on their dyno. Nice guys though, they were smiling the whole time.
