need alittle help building my motor
i want to get my 89 LO3 to run mid-low 14's. i know it's not too hard. i'm getting the LT1 cam, Hooker catback, brian's chip at tbichips.com, open element air cleaner, 3.23 or 3.42 gearing i gotta find them first though (if you have either of them preferably 3.42 please email me: injection@hvc.rr.com ) i know i'm on the right track. what would i be pulling around with them mods? what else would i need?thanks guys

I've got an Edelbrock TBI intake, LT1 cam, and new Z28 valve springs. I haven't touched the exhaust so far except for the flowmaster muffler the first owner put on it. My 3.42 gears are sitting on the work bench, and the posi is in the mail
I hope to do a full 3in. exhaust and custom chip tuning by the end of the summer...
right now, with the 2.73 gears, it bogs off the line, but it screams up top, and pulls to at least 5500 rpms
*edit: if you mean times, I don't have any yet...

see my car supposedly has 2.73 gears but it seems to move boy. i'v driving an 84 Lg4 before and an 86 LG4 and they had the 3.23 gearing, my friends 86 has 165hp and stock the tbi has 170, but this thing will absolutely demolish his car, i don't know if it's stock or not, but it's got some guts.

In stock form thi TBI has gobs of low end torque, but not much top end, thats why they are so much fun to drive, but nor realy that fast. It is amazing that a heavy *** car with only 170 hp moves like they do, but they have very little top end. after all my mods I didn't gain nearly as much lowend torque, But wow is that top end a lot of fun.

well i didn't mean i want like loads of top end. the reason our cars don't have top end it there is a limiter of 108mph. buy brians chip and it eliminates that and you can get like 125-133mph he said. 120 is fine for me. i don't drive on the highway that much. but i would love it to have most bottom end then anything.like i said it already takes off like a bastard but i want ALOT of bottom. alittle top. top i can gain with the chip. so i'm just going for bottom now. the LT1 cam i believe is idle-4500rpm. that would be wonderful. anyways thanks

When all these guys are speaking of "top end" they aren't talking speed top end they're talking top end RPM. Stock, a TBI will only pull to about 4500 then it falls on its face shortly after. If you get an LT1 cam and some gears in the back like 3.42's or 3.73's you'll be able to pull some RPM pretty decently. Don't put too much stock into ratings such as "idle - 4500" an LT1 cam in a 305 will pull higher than it would in a 350, you should be able to pull to about 5500 I would think with that cam.

from my experience so far, (no gears yet) if you want the tire spinning off the line fun, don't use the LT1 cam. Right now my car doesn't even like moving until it gets to about 2000 rpm. thats where the fun begins
I'm told that tuning the timing in the chip will help, so that's on my very soon to do list...
This is if you just do the cam. If you work the entire engine, exhaust, rear end, and maybe even the tranny, then the LT1 cam might act different, but by itself it really is a little too much for the stock 305.

why do you think it's too much for the stock 305? just because it's power is at 2000rpm? eventually i am getting headers, i've got a cat back, and a chip, and i'm getting 3.23 - 3.42 gearing.

When you drive it, it just doesnt seem to have any ***** off the line. Its not bad, just not the same feeling that it used to have.

That is why you are going to want to put some lower gears in the rear. Our cars have bad rear gear ratios for performance so any cam that has any ***** at all isn't going to have much off the line. I wouldn't even think about doing a cam swap or any internal engine work before getting a posi carrier and either 3.42 or 3.73 gears. If you start making good power you are going to be disappointed if you still don't have posi because you'll have trouble putting that power to the ground.
