need help.. on my starter/something?
well the day i got my car on the road i was driving it around. it's an 89 LO3 trans am. anyways it was a very hot day, and i went to my friends house. when i went out to leave my car was dead (the battery..brand new) so i figured it was my altinator or something. i got home tested my altinator and it was fine.. and the problem didn't come back. now it's been doing it more and more though. when it gets hot, will not start. when the battery isn't dead and still has some juice in it, when i turn it over it just clicks, if i try it again, the battery will go even more dead and it won't click or anything. then if i try it again.. no juice is left. now tonight i was experimenting on it, and i had juice left in the battery and didn't kill it, let it sit and cool down for a few minutes, and started right up. i've come to the conclusion it's 1 of the 2 problems.. what do you guys think? anyone have this experience?
1. the starter is taking a shi t
2. the heat sheild (don't know what it is, but everyone keeps telling me that could be my problem)
any input is appriciated, thanks in advance.

Ah, I still have that problem LOL
One of 2 conditions are happening, maybe both.
1. Your starters taking a ****
2. Your timing is advanced too far for the stock starter to work correctly.
If you have headers, the starter sit directly beside the header and heats up like a motha ****er, you know. Anyway, when the starters get hot, they don't like to work right. This is amplified if the starter is already going bad.(which if its original, then I think that's probably the problem). Don't hold the key in as log and "tap the key when you try to start. It should click afe(maybe 7-8 times)and then eventually start. This will be a temperary fix, so you'll have to save up and buy a new starter soon.
Best of luck to ya

had the problem on my 89 formula with lo3 just had to replace my starter. went with a powermaster high torque mini starter for 149 problem is now gone go for it
Had the same problem with my car, the starter was getting heat soaked(new starter, 3rd one since i owned the car)Bought a Mr. Gasket heat sheild for it, no problems since. The starter just gets to hot where GM placed it. Its inbetween the manifold and the y pipe of the car, wich it gets way toooooooooooo hot. If the starter is pretty old, I would get a new one and put the heat sheild on top of it, or wrap it in some kind of heat tape. Let me know if this helps out any.

you would have a better chance at a performance shop.
for mail order, you can call summit at 800 230 3030
or look in your phone book and find a local shop...
its not a stock replacement part, so autozone, or anyplace like autozone wont have it in the computer (and thats all alot of them know how to do)
they MAY have one on the "perfomance" isle with all the chrome spectre stuff.. but its a long shot.
