2 stock TBI thermostats?

Went to the dealer yesterday to get a stock replacement 195 degree thermostat for my 92 rs. Figured it would be easy since all sbc's have the same thermostat. Well I guess I was wrong cause the parts guy said there are 2 just for my specific engine, code E, aka 305 tbi. One is 52 mm and the other is 58 mm. He also said the 305 tpi and 350 tpi both use the same thermostat and there is only one for those. Which one do I get? The bigger question is why are there 2 thermostats for my car? I don't get it. Anyone else know anything about this?

im thinking its a 58 mm, but yeah, just go to auto zone, and tell them to give you a 180 stat. itll work. and itll be 100 dollars less than a damn dealership

Anyone know the dimensions on the v6 stats? I'm thinkin maybe the other one was for a v6. The only reason I'm not going to put in a 180 stat yet is because I want to do a completely stock tune up and get some baseline runs at the track in TRUE stock form. That way I have a reference for future mods and can accurately document any future mods and their effects. My goal is to see EXACTLY how the L03 responds to every single mod and document them for anyone's future reference. I am hoping to have track times within the next 2 weeks BONE STOCK, lol.

Oh well, so be it. Atleast I will have something to base all of my future mods on. Might start out with a 16.7, then after a mod maybe a 16.5, then another mod and a 16.1, then another mod and 15's. You gotta start somewhere and I think it would be cool to be able to know exactly what each mod did for me. Who knows, I might get lucky and run faster than that, lol. The only way to find out is to go to the track.

Thanks, it should be interesting to see just what the 305 tbi can do in full stock trim. I doubt if you just added a carb you will run faster though. There is a lot more restrictive stuff on the L03 than the tbi. Good luck to you either way.

I wonder if they somehow got the L03 truck and car thermostats clumped together. However the truck has a different vin code digit. I think it was still 'H'.

That might be it. I clearly told the guy my engine code was E though so I dunno. I double checked with another parts guy too and he said the same thing. Maybe it's just a mix up in the computer???? Who knows, but the consensus is that the stock thermostat is 58 mm correct?
