Timing HELP!!
Guys....I put a L98 cam into my L03 a couple of months ago. I was at the track yesterday and I was not impressed with the gains. I went from a best of 15.96 to a new best of 15.78 (now granted I know she has more in her with the way it is curretnly set up....I was just not really concentrating/paying attention yesterday). Now I am thinking I can get a little bit more out of the car thru some timing adjustments, now I know I should have spent more time "tweaking it" before running it but regardless I was not impressed since the mods I have done vs. last year were the addition of the cam + a catback system. The car never really had much "pop" off the line...but I am thinking it should be a little better than it is....I am thinking i dont have the timing advanced enough......or do you guys think its just the crappy 2:73 gears.
How much timing are any of you guys with L98 or LT1 Cams running, and how can you tell when you are running too much.
BTW....mods I have done.....Ultimate TBI, underdrive, open element, headers, cat, y-pipe and Catback, L98 Cam.....Soon to come carb intake (cant remember which model) and 3:45's with posi...no more 1 wheel Peel!!!!!
Thanks,
Dave

Time to reprogram!!! But if you want to be hard headed base timing is set 0 with the car at operrating temp and ECT brown and tan wire disconected should be by your AC/Heater box by the fender well. Do to a wimpy spark curve from gm some might get a way with bumping the timing up some.

ahhhgggg...that is what I thought....I really do not want to get into re-programming the ecm this summer....maybe I should start to dive into it.

Yeah, after a cam swap, you're really going to want to get into programing. For the time being though, I think most people with LT1 cams run 8* to 12* advance base timing. You're gonna want to up the fuel pressure as well.
Another problem with is that you swapped in a larger cam (i.e. more upper rpm power) but have the very restrictive stock intake on there. You have the exhaust hooked up and open element, but that intake is killing you. Once you you get that aftermarket intake on there, the cam will be better matched to the intake's flow capabilities and you will see nice gains as the two will work in conjuction. The gears and posi will make a huge difference as well, and you may want to think about a higher stall converter too.
You have a lot of potential, I would guess at least mid 14s after your mods.

Thanks for all the responses guys.....I guess maybe what I should do is get my but in gear and get that new intake of mine on there....and THEN start to get into the serious tuning etc.
Hmmmm.....mid 14's would certainly be nice.....I guess I have that to work towards....time for me to get off my but and start doing some work on her again!
Thanks,
Dave
