TBI to Carb
Wats this swap gonna take on an lo3?
I know I'll need a carb, intake, a vacume distributer, and reran fuel lines. What else will I need? Also, does the stock fuel pump push a low enough pressure, or will I still need to rip it out of the tank?
I've already done a search, but couldnt find what I want, so any links would be cool, too.
Thanx,
Chris

Ok, I found the tech. article. Der.
I got everthing 'cept the fuel delivery stuff.
Has anyone that's done this swap done it with the AFPR and fuel pressure guage instead of putting a carb fuel pump on it succefully? I'd much rather pull out my small intestine then that fuel tank..

Just outta curiousity.......why are you switching to a carb?
Anyways, as far as the fuel regualtor goes, you can buy one from almost any auto parts store, or if more inclined, summit or jegs. Most are adjustible from 4-9psi, and only run around $50 if I remember right.
Also, many people make dropping the tank sound harder than it really is. The biggest pain is removing the exhaust if your cat has welded itself to the pipes.

The AFPR has to be a return style unit. Mallory makes one - its about $80 IIRC. Nice unit, I have had no problems with it.
Do you have the entire third brake light assembly?

because the carb is able to suck in more air!!! i turned over my quadrajunk and looked at the huge gaping holes and then i turned over my poor little tbi and found it has tiny holes for the air to flow... plus a carb is easier to tune not necessarily better to tune. i think the tbi wouldn't be that big a deal to mod if it would flow more. from what i know if you are only utilizing a dual plane manifold and you are sucking through 2 holes, each side of the engine is sucking through 1 hole. if you go single plane the engine is sucking from both holes. it was cheaper for me to buy the stuff to go carb. 1. i already had a carb. 2. i had a carb manifold 3. i can use it on a 350 or bigger with no problems and i don't have to spend money on chips to burn. don't get me wrong i liked my ported tb but i can do sooo much more with a carb. how many 10 sec tbi's are out there???? nun that i know of freakin pablo is running in the 13's with a 305(310) that is great!!!how many 13 sec tbi's are out there that are smaller than a 350? the 305 is just a stepping stone for a 350... i bought only performance add ons that can be transfered to a 350 when the 305 craps out. i have only been at this game a little over a year but i grew up around cars and i want tried and true performance parts not theoretical stuff. i thought about experimenting with the tbi some but i'll still have a high 14 sec low 15 sec car... with the mods i have by going to carb i could easily get down into the low 14's with a few more things i can go 13's. i may even go supercharged and i can use my mallory 4309 fpr to do it it has a 1:1 boost refrence. its very simple.
i have also been saying i was going to buy the prom burning stuff and a cable to run winaldl for a year now... i have the program but no cable... and i am excited about going to the carb becasue it is something i can do that is fun for me. if you won't to hop up your tb go ahead i am sure it'll be fun for you but i am getting bored with the tbi.
it's kinda like some of the guys i work with... they are like "it's stupid to spend that much money on fixing up an old car" but what they don't realize is that that is my hobby... they spend just as much money doing the things they do that to me are stupid like golf... wasting money on getting drunk or smoking or doing other things that i don't enjoy. butlike i said for me those are stupid, for you they may be the best thing since sliced bread!!! well i am not trying to flame or hurt anyones feelings . i enjoy the tbi board because of everyones enthusiasm for making the tb better.

Gonna have to agree with him. My buddy threw a carb on his 305 and for some reason it went faster. LoL. And if anyone remembers Duke? Dual TBI guy? Yeah, see what he has to say about TBI being performance friendly. I am switching to carb when I throw in the 350 this winter. It may not be better all around, but it gets the performance job done better then TBI in my opinion. Good luck with the swap and tell us how it goes.

This has been a big argument since the dawn of time. I went the latter of the two and went TPI. Everyone has their prefence with induction, so don't bother arguing about it.

with a properly tuned carb, you probably wont hurt your gas mileage to bad. i had a 88 maro with a 355,mild cam(like .420-.442 lift), a/c, 670 steet avenger, 700r4 tranny and 3.08 gears. i got about 20 to the gallon on the interstate at about 75 to 80 mph. just try to keep your foot out of it. hehehe... yeah right.
oh, BTW you guys have finally convinced me to put that same street avenger on my car as soon as i do the valve train swap.... thanks alot.

So back to the origional question....DRIFTER-X, why are you switching to carb?
I will not argue switching to carb for perfomance and ease of tuning, but I will if it is on a completely stock L03.
Oh, and if I had the money (hopefully one day), I would go with a stealth ram

I want a carb for 2 reasons- 1)More flow, more power
2)Carbs are fun and easy to tune
Its not gonna be stock for long. As soon as I get the carb on it, I'm investing in some Hooker shorties, then hopefuly a set of Vortec heads and a Comp cam soon after christmas.
This engine is gonna be in there 'till I can afford an LS1, or it blows up, which I'm expecting/hoping will happen about the same time.
BTW, gas mileage is my last concern right now, c'mon I'm 18!
~brodyscamaro, You'll have a PM as soon as I get back home.

Oh I would go SR too if cash permitted. But I gained power and MPG from going carb with a stock LO3.

I shouild be getting a carb and intake for dirt cheep from a friend, he's just gotta see what size it is for me, so the first one wouldnt be a problemb. Would 650 be too big? According to calculations, the 305 only need a 500.

A 650 on an L03 is way too big, but given the proper build up it would be ok. I'm tellin ya, just wait to put the carb on there until after you do your mods given you do them around the same time, especially if you have a 650. I think you would do more harm then good if you did it now. just my $.02 though
