rebuilding

hey guys, in the works of rebuilding my 305 tbi. i've got lt1 cam, performer tbi intake, edelbrock headers, torqer heads, open element, when i take apart my 305 i'm not sure what to expect. my dad is a mechanic and told me to re ring it and clean the pistons up if their not too bad. ok so i go to jegs and i found one company that has pistons there for a 305. so now trying to find the rigns i cannot find a set of rings for this 305 for nothing. talking to my friend he told me if the engine has alot of wear the cylinders become oval shaped and i should probably have it bored out.. is this true? i don't relly want to go that far with it. does anybody know where i can find a set of rings and pistons for this damn thing? i've already got a gasket kit so i don't need like a whole kit. thanks guys

Just call jegs and they should get some for you in a matter of seconds. You could also get factory replacment ones at any auto parts store. I would have the block checked at a machine shop to determine if a rebore is necessary. If it is, than you will need new pistons to go along with your new rings. But by the time you do that you could spend all of your efforts and equal $$ into a 350.

yea well i hear that about the 350.. but i already started my 305 build up so i just want to stick with my little 305. it will be nice to say i got a 305 that will run mid 13's anyways. i checked out auto zone and i couldn't find anythign for my car there.. very strange. i asked about piston and rings.. then the guy turned that into buying a brand new 305 then that turned into buying a 350.. the 350 LO5 has 210hp and my 305 is going to have 310hp so why would i spend a grand on something an lose 100hp. well thanks for the advice guys.

What kind of heads do you have? Please give exact specs on them too. That figure for 310hp sounds pretty high for an LT1 cammed 305.

Any engine parts/machine shop should be able to supply you with rings for the factory pistons, chances are they will be more expensive than rings for aftermarket pistons. Even if it didn't need a bore job i would go for a set of H534P speed pros and a set of E356K rings.

it's 290hp i made a mistake.. and a question about the enginekits.com

it says stock 305 pistons are $55.92
it says stock 305 rings are $21.95

this can't be for all 8 pistons and all the rings could it? that would be some wonderful news if thats the case.

download their catalog, the flat top 305 pistons that you want are only $75. DL the catalog and look at all the parts and options that they have.

The rims are still on the car and if I sold them I wouldn't have anything to put on in their place. Two of them are slightly damaged from the wreck but I plan on replaceing them when the $$ arives and the fix up work begins. However, no decisions are final. Now back to your scheduled topic.........

Can anyone give me an estimate on how much it would cost to rebuild a nice 305 with the S/R heads, LT1 cam, TBI Intake, and all the other normal things you need? May be hard to give an estimate, owell.

it's going to cost alot. i want to do this project because i'm planning on running mid-high 13's. i only am rebuilding the 305 so i can show people that a 305 can be a nice motor. if i wanted a motor with a raging 500hp then i would go ahead and build a 350 but i don't want that. 300hp suits my needs greatly. i want to go to island dragway this spring and lose to a ls1 trans am by a few tenths of a second and go.. well i lost but i only have a 305. anyways enough of me babaling here are some prices that i've paid so far.

heads: $367 (each)
lt1 cam: $50 (used about 30,000 miles)
timing chain set: $30
lifters: $185
intake: $260
3.42s: $45
gasket kit: $70 (every gasket you can think of)
chip: $45
K&n: $50

now as far as the pistons go.. i've found some from jegs for $183 but thats a reason i'm at this thread. and read the above reply the guy said $75 for pistons.. so i'm gonna go with them. rings will be like $40 from napa. and the rockers are $185.. like i said i invested alot of money.. and i can get a 350 goodwrench engine for 120 bucks and i could also get a 350 block for free.. but the point is like i said i just want my 305. leave it up to you to make the decision on if you want to invest in a 350 or your 305.

edit:

also i gotot to give you the headers and exhaust:

this is a must though. before you do any motor work make sure you do the exhaust first.

edelbrock tes ehaders and y ipe: 370
cat backs: range usually around 300

i work at midas and made my own 3" pipe to a ravin muffler

I checked summit's web site and they have the H534P (flat top 4 valve relief)hypereutectic pistons for 14.99 each, cast pistons for a little over 10.00 ea. Moly rings for 40.00 a set. I have used alot of these pistons/rings without any problems.
