Idle problems

i did headers and exhaust this fall. ever since, the car idles at 1,500 rpm for several minutes on cold mornings below 40 degrees. on mornings between 40 and 50 degrees, it idles at around 1,200. after 5 minutes or so, the idle slowly comes down to normal.

this is freaking me out. i'm really big on warming the engine up before i drive it, and the thought of what those 1500 rpm startups are doing to my bearings is making me cringe!

i'm wondering if this is just the stovepipe being missing, or if it can be addressed in my upcoming foray into chip burning. does anyone have any ideas?

that is totally normal, my car does the same thing. This just allows the car to warm up faster.

Yea that seems pretty normal. Your tach is probably off so I bet you are closer to 1200 rpm.

it didn't do it before the exhaust installation. last winter, it idled at 1000 rpm on cold mornings.

my *** it should make you grine every morning you start it if you
have a good sounding exhaust 1500 does seem alittle high but if it idles back down in 2 min I would not worry about it hope your oil pump works

Adding power to these cars can throw off a lot of little things in the tuning aspect. Just ask Dewey316 who found a whole slew of things he had to change in his prom when he added headers. Some of these things could be causing your higher idle.

Mine's an auto but it will idle at about 1500 rpm at startup and slowly go down to about 700 in a period of about 4 minutes. It's normal and I believe is programmed that way from the factory. I'de be interested in knowing what everyone elses idles at on startup and how long it takes to go back down to normal.
