Showing my ignorance
I have a 91 firebird with the stock 305 TBI. The only mods are the lack of the cat. convertor, and a slit lengthwise in the pipe, allowing the exhaust to vent before ever reaching the muffler. The car has 165k miles on her and I'm pretty sure the rings are burnt b/c she smokes pretty bad. I'm gonna rebuild it this summer, and would appreciate any feedback on getting the best out of my money. I bought a kit from summitracing that includes all the pistons/rings/gaskets, etc. I'm a college student with limited funds, but any useful information would be great.
Also, I'm interested in putting ram air into the car, but was told by someone that the tbi wouldn't handle it because it would give the engine too much oxygen, causing the check engine light to stay on as well as bog down the engine....true or not?

The check engine light to stay on is jsut bs. Itll work fine but there are some issues with the fact that its a wet flow system. In cold weather, the fuel doesnt evaporate as easily and it can affect drivability at cold temperatures.
Getting a 350 short block and starting with that would ahve been a better investment but if you ahve all the parts for the 305 and jsut intend to use it for transportation then thats ok as well.

I'm doing ram-air as soon as I can afford my ASCD SS hood. With TBI it's actually not that hard to rig ram air to it, especially with a new hood. Some people even use grill inserts to difflect cold air up to the intake...Bruce (90RS305)
