New to Hear and wanted some suggestions
Hi I have used the classifieds on this site before but have never used the forums until tonight. Well I have a 91 Firebird with a T-5 and a 305 TBI with basically just a chip and a muffler and and opened up intake. Well I blew that motor up and put in a 350 motor out of a 90 Caprice cop car. Well I still kept the chip and stuff but I just bought a edelbrock intake manifold for itand spacer. I don't even know if I will have enough hood clearance for all of this but we will see. Ok I am sure you guys get this question like 10 times a day but what else can/should I do? I know I should get headers but I am keeping this emissions legal and was wondering what would be easy to use? So basically I was just looking for some useful insight. Thanks, Ron.

Also I didnt use the tbi of the caprice because it was different. I assume it has the police package since it was a police car and should I use those injectors in mine of are they too big?

I want to do headers back but I dont really want to do any custom exhaust work. I was wondering if anyone had any *** ideas on what to get and I have the 2 1/4 pipe should I go with the bigger one that was on the factory cars?

I would nnot buy anything until you have the car tuned to work with that motor. The stock chip cannot even support the 305 no less the 350. Plus since you are using the larger inejctors you need to have that worked out in your prom as well. You can still buy headers and remain emissions legal. The stock is exhaust and tune is slaughtering the potential of that motor and it would not suprise me if it is slower than your 305 was in its current condition.

I forgot to mention to replace the chip with the one from the cop car.
Shifty, i believe he said in his original post he was using the stock throttlebody. If everything remains stock with the exception of the intake, headers and catback and he uses the copcar chip I would think he would be alot closer that the stock 305 chip. Of coarse he would be a lot better off tuning his own chip when he has learned how too.

I have a hypertech chip for the 305 in my car now. I dont have the one for the caprice. Do you think the hypertech is ok since the tbi is still the same or should i get a new chip?

So I guess i am basically asking if I should put the injectors from the caprice in when I put on my edelbrock maifold which I plan on doing in like two weeks. I have a hypertech chip but its for the 305. So I guess the other thing is to scrap my junk exhaust and getting everything. Should I put a cam in this motor? Or and aftermarket tbi? I mean what should I start to look for after the exhaust? And do you think the computer will run fine with the bigger injectors or is it a waste of time? Thanks guys I really do appreciate your help. No I think im getting this. Im not real qucik but your helping a lot. hahaha. Is the average person capable of making their own chip? For a fuel pump? should I use a tpi pump or is there something else thats affordable that would be better. This is kind o a low budget project daily driver thing going on here if you know what I mean. I heard a lot of people talking about the LT1 cam... is that something that would work well with this combo. Also you have any suggestions on heads? I know this is a lot but this is a real low budget car and I need to keep my eyes open for stuff I will need later. I got the motor for free which was a crate motor in a 90 caprice cop car. So I am going to be slowly working on this thing. Thanks, Ron.
You know, that's a good question. I've done and can do just about everything but chip tuning. The whole thing just confuses the hell out of me. People say sure, go to the DIY forum and learn. BS! I go there and it's all foreign language to me. I don't understand a damn thing, and when you ask a question they expect you to know all the codes and stuff and are never willing to help a newby out. Nothing makes sense to me, I mean nothing.

It really depends on how much you want to spend. Once you start adding heads and cam the rpice goes way up. There are lots of little hidden costs that go beyond just the parts themselves. Things like gaskets, selants, specialty tools, and replacement parts. Those things add up real quick if you do not already have them and can put a damper on your budget. I spend 40 bucks on a LT1 but was close to 150 in cost by the time I got it into the car. And I did it the cheap way. I am just getting into chip burning myself, but I can say this. My good buddy burns his own chips and I have watched him do it and it is comepletly within my realm. It is one of those things where you have to get the stuff and just start. Hands on is the real way to learn it. Like you said, just reading it doens't get you very far but once you have it in front of your face it makes a lot more sense.

You know guys, given his situation, I wouldn't advise him to go ahead and jump into the whole chip burning thing just yet.
Seeing how he has a Cop 350, once he puts on the Caprice injectors he basically has a stock Cop 350, Sooooo, a standard 350 Cop Chip will work just fine for him. By the way, you can find them all the time on Ebay.
And when he does the exhaust (which you should do), he basically just has a Cop 350 TBI with a full exhuast, which is well within the parameters of the Cop Chip. . .except for the T-5 thing. I'm not sure how that works.
Baby steps yall, baby steps. . .

Even if he has a stock 9C1 350, the stock cop chip will still be off a bit in his car. I've heard that the timing curves are slightly different in automatic bins than in manual bins, but I haven't looked into it myself. I think the main issue though would be the fact that his car ways MUCH less than a caprice so I would think the VE tables and timing would be off still. But, don't get me wrong, it would be a good starter chip I think.

Thanks guys for your help. I guess I am just going to take it one step at a time and use some trial and error to get it right. I appreciate your input a lot. The only other question I have will be if I do get a caprice chip can I put that in my ecm or do I have to put a caprice ecm in my car with a caprice chip? I don't think you can change the ecm but I really dont know that much and I wasnt sure if a different chip would work with my ecm? Thanks, Ron.

I think a few of the TCC settings are changed for the manual bin related to the shift light IIRC. What you can do is go to www.tbichips.com give him $30 and tell him you want a Cop chip setup for a manual trans and he'll set you up.

Well I guess $30 isnt too bad compared what was paid for the damn hypertech stage 2 chip... it was a gift though so I can;t complain. But I guess I will give to get into chip burning if I plan on doing more mods all the time.
