Guide me in the right direction. :-/
Ok
, i've been coming up with the engine plans for the past month. this is my first time every modding heavily like cams, heads and such. so while i was peicing together what i would get i saw a whole engine kit by holley, answer to my confusion!
I planned to use vortec heads with teh vortec compatable Performer RPM intake, and either an LT1 cam or somthing else.
Im totally confused trying to mix and match parts and getting everything id need so i dont have to do this again.
the engine kit by holley (part #: HLY-300-503-1 on summit racing)
seems like an answer to my confusion, however it says its not for a 305, but for 302, 327, 350. 305 not included.
would this work for a 305? and if it does would it be a smart choice.
If its not a smart choice can you give me a vortec setup list thats budget concerned (no actual budget just kept low cash spending)?
Thanks!

Forget about the holley kit. That is a set-up for carb applications. The LT1 cam is a good choice but you are going to need way more than just a cam and heads tostay within your budget. I would only look into heads and cam if you already have a full exhuast from the headers back, better than stock fuel pump, and the ability to burn your own chips. A quick search will tell you what heads you should focus on along with why the LT1 cam is a good choice. This topic comes up once a week and you will find enough old posts to keep you reading for awhile. You should have your answer by then. If not feel free to ask and I will be happy to help you out. Good luck!

if i were starting over, the first thing i would do is learn how to log data an burn chips. on fuel injected cars in general and tbi cars specifically, tuning is absolutely critical. every change you make is going to have an effect on that tune, and you won't see the full benefit of the changes you make till you learn how to do that. when i first came on the boards, i saw all the guys with headers and exhausts, intakes, ignitions, gears, cams, heads, etc and still running in the 14s and 15s and thought "what a bunch of maroons!" (sorry guys). i figured they made poor parts choices or put together mismatched combinations. however, if you'll look at my sig, you'll see that i am one of them now.
i understand headers, cams, heads, etc, so that's the direction i've gone in. i didn't understand datalogging and chip tuning, so i've avoided it, figuring i'd do it "when i had to". meanwhile, there are guys on here with totally stock combinations running faster than i am who've done nothing but burn chips for their cars (dewey316, for one). not only are they doing better stock, they'll get more out of each modification thay make along the way as well, because they're optimizing the tune at every step.
after mastering tuning and chip burning, i'd do a gear and posi swap. i picked up over half a second alone when i went from a 3.08 single traction to a 3.42 posi.
after that, i'd do exhaust, ignition, intake, etc. if you're good enough with the chip tuning, i believe it's possible to get into the 13s with the stock heads and cam.
search the archives on this board, do internet searches, dig and dig and dig. there's plenty of information on how to do all this, and half the fun of it is finding it.

Now he is shotting for mid 14's with the cam, more tuning and all the other stuff he had. Supreme Member

I agree with sean30306, as I am there myself. All my work, and 9 months later my ride rots in the driveway 'cause I haven't the ability to burn chips, and can find no one to do it for me. And I wasn't wanting the moon, just more than 170hp. If I had it to do over again, I'd find the ability to get chips before anything else - and lock that down, even if it meant kidnapping the chip burner guy and tying him in the basement while I did the mechanicals. Making an engine run is easy. Making a computer think IT knows how to make an engine run is a whole new ball of wax! Mechanicals take days - chips take months, and with no guarantees.
