89 suburban 350tbi/700r4 to 82 C-10

Sorry this is off f-body topic... i own an f-bod too (92TA).

I have an 82 SWB c-10 setup for a carbed 350 / th350... I want to swap the entire 350tbi/700r4 powertrain from my wrecked 89 2wd suburban. My questions are...

1. What fuel pump will work for the tbi... i hear just about any inline efi pump that will make 14 psi will work?? any suggestions?? i need a cheap pump. (junkyard?) any plumbing suggestions?? (return?) the c-10 has dual tanks.. but only one is hooked up... the other has a tear in the bottom... i'll be looking out for one at the junkyard. I know the 87' models were fuel injected... how were their fuel pumps setup?? one in each tank??

2. Will the stock c-10 driveshaft work? I hear the th350 and the 700r4's yoke are the same?? what about length??

other than that... most everything from the suburban, firewall forward, will be going onto the truck... front clip... radiator.. etc... I just rebuilt the frontend on the suburban too... might as well swap it too...

basically just want to use the entire suburban powertrain... it's totally complete cept for the wrecked side.

any suggestions will be helpful...

Thanks
Fluval

Any intank fuel pump that will supply over 15PSI of pressure should to the trick. You can use any LT1/LS1 or TPI pump out of a yard. Do not go with a 305 TBI pump because it cannot support enough fuel for a larger motor effectively. You are going to need the whole fuel pump assemlby including a return line if the previous vehicle was carb. You are going to have to ask your drivetrain questions in another forum though.

EDIT: I will let this thread go as long as all of the questions are TBI related. I know it is not a 3rd gen but many of your questions are the same for anyone converting to TBI. Therefore it may help them. There aren't many sites out there that offer the TBI knowledge of the TGO crew.

Thanks... The suburban has a 40 gallon tank in the rear... the truck has saddle tanks... will the in-tank pump from the suburban fit in the truck tank?? I haven't pulled either one yet... I have replaced a few in-tank pumps though... including 3rd gens... I was wondering if the older saddle tanks had the same type setup way back then... just without the pump.

Thanks for any advice.

I really have no idea about the in-tank differences. You best bet would be to pull a 3rd gen unit and compair it to that. You could send the Administrator a PM and he would be able to let you know what you password is to retain your old name.

EDIT: I had a bad typo in there that said intake.

The th700-r4 is longer than a th350. You can either get a driveshaft from a newer C-10.. like 85+ IIRC. They had 700-r4's.

As far as the pump, just buy an external, run a new line and use the old line as the return.

A lot of info you need about your truck can be found at

I have an '83 C-10 and was thinking of doing the same with the engine from my '92 RS.

Some @ord trucks came with a nice external frame mounted pump that will work fine for TBI.

Thanks guys for all the great input...

I have heard that the ford pumps work.. does anyone know what years had the external.. (sorry... dont usually do fords) i suppose something that was on a 351 or maybe a 302... I'll go searchin to see what i can dig up on em... Does anyone know if by chance the 40gallon suburban tank's fuel pump / sending unit will fit the saddle tank from the 82 p/u directly?? I need to see the GM parts cross reference.

Thank the lord for this board... I have owned 11 thirdgens... still have 1... this is the best resource around...

Am i correct that the yoke is the same for the 350 and the 700r4? I understand the 700 is a little longer so i'll need a shorter driveshaft... i wonder if any SWB/700r4 P/U will fit? maybe just have this one shortened.

The truck has a set of headers and a dual with flows and an h pipe... all welded.. i suppose a bung for the o2 sensor... or are there the "dummy" o2 emulators available for these tbi's

With exhaust in place and a fresh 350 TBI... maybe a few mods...heads /cam / prom should make a decent "parts" truck. lol so i can get more thirdgen parts home.

thanks again for keeping this thread alive... these are universal GM issues that most of us find along the way... Every thirdgen owner i know also owns other chevy's too... mostly trucks/suvs
I used my suburban to tow my thirdgens to the track.

Thanks

Glad we could help but you are gonna have to keep it TBI related if you want to keep it open. I am sorry but I have to follow the board rules. You need only 1 O2 for TBI and you have to have it. So don't both with any dummy O2's. You will have to post your trany concerns in the drivetrain board. I would only mention the trannys though and not what your porject is. That way it will stay open.
