Changing to a higher octane, good or bad?

I just bought my first Camaro and im pretty excited about it. It's a 92 RS with a 305. The car only has 46000 miles on it and i am the second owner. I dont know what kind of gas the first owner used but i was wondering if it would be a bad idea to use 91 octane. Ive heard horror stories about the bad things high octane could do to the engine if the engine is used to 87. But on the other hand ive heard that it wouldn't hurt at all. Just wondering if you guys could clear things up a bit.
Thanks!

it prolly won't even need the higher octane, but it certainly will not hurt the car in any way.

It would be a waste of money.

You should be able to get away with 87 without a problem. When you start adding base timing would be when you need to go a bit higher. I run 4* advanced and need at least 89.

it wont hurt the car at all... however, it'll hurt your wallet. your car was made to be able to take 87.. you dont get any more power from higher octane, and it doesnt clean your engine or do anything else. for you, with that car, it just costs more.... so save a buck and use 87.

octane is a measure of how resistant it is to abnormal combustion.. not a measure of power potental.

the person that told you that, doesnt know what hes talking about. on a car made for only high octane, it could hurt to use 87, but not the other way around.... you could use 93 if you wanted.. but it costs more.

just dont use race gas or leaded gas.. they will mess with your O2 sensor. (and wont give you more power anyway..)

That is because of the timing differences.

It say's not to go any lower than 87, but higher is ok. Just thought I would clear that up.

Hmm...on that one I've got mixed emotions. I know with MY car, I've ONLY run 91 octane in it since I got it. Had her for almost 2 years now. About 3 months ago, Arizona had a gas "shortage" ( ) and Chevron ran out of 91 and 89. Seeing as I ran out of gas pulling into the station I had no choice but to use 87, and on that tank my milege dropped 5.5mpg. Wasn't too happy about that...
