Trouble Starting When Warm

Ok, here is my crazy car. Its an 83 Cross Fire (save it, I have heard it all, but i like being different, plus the louvers that pop up are cool when you pound it). When cold it starts up fine, but if I drive it for a while (enough to get to normal temp), then let it sit (enough to go below normal temp), it won't start. I have to shoot starter fluid down the butterfly (and yes, I know that isn't good for it, but its better that than being stuck somewhere). It is getting very annoying and its hard to look good for the girls when your fixing your stupid car just to get it to start. Any help would be appreciated.

well could be your not getting enough fuel.. the f-body have a big problems with their starters when the heat up the dont work you have to let them cool down and then the start up i fixed the problem by putting a heat shield on mine.

This is my geuss. Unless however the car turns over. You could be getting vapor lock if your car is running abnormally hot. How close are your fuel lines to heat sources?

First of all, i have heard of vapor lock, but don't really know what it is, so if you can explain it for me that would be helpful, and as for the fuel lines, i have no clue where they run cuz my fuel filter is in the front of my motor (replaced that last summer hoping that was the prob). As for the starter, it cranks over, but the engine just doesn't go, so i'm thinking that isn't the problem. If it is the lack of fuel, would the stock fuel lines hold a better fuel pump?

put a TPI fuel pump in... you'll thank me later. I had an 82 Z that would do the same thing. Make sure both TB's are very clean. Get some choke and carb cleaner. A couple of the biggest cans you can find. Spray all over, in the TB's and esspecially down the IAC ports as carbon tends to build up over time. Need I remind you that it's had a lot of time to build up in there. Also, check the fuel lines on top of the intake going to the TB's. Make sure there are no loose fittings. Make sure there isn't an inch of rubber line from the fuel filter all the way to the driver's side TB. If there is you need to replace it with the original metal line. No matter what I did I couldn't get any kind of rubber hose to seal tightly and it sucked in air, esspecially the line between the two TB's. Unless you just want to keep it totally stock for prosperity purposes, convert the big clumsy air cleaner to an open element. All it does is collect heat and happily transfers it right down your TB's. Something else to look at is the 321635165135 miles of vacuum lines running around the intake and TB's.

One last thing...

if you haven't do so already.. join up on the crossfire injection forum. Ken Kelly and the gang are a WEALTH of knowledge when it comes to crossfire cars.

I hope some of this helps you

does anyone know if they make open element filters then for crossfires, or am i going to have to hope that the old 67(ish ?) cross ram set up is going to work on my car? Either that or how hard would it be to make one. If it its vapor lock, is there a way to put a heat shield on/around the fuel lines to stop that? And, while i'm at it, does anyone have a tpi fuel pump for sale???

You most likely do not have vapor lock. I bet you can use those tiny air cleaner assemblies that they make and put one on each TBI unit. I really know nothing about cross fire though.

Turn the top of the stock air cleaner over. See the two round lids that seal on top of the air cleaners? Remove those CAREFULLY and use them as individual filter lids.

Some parts you really don't want to get and use if it has been used. If you do you're just asking for it. Autozone carries the AC Delco tpi pump for about $80. Remember the saying, "you get what you pay for". It applies heavily here so buy a good quality pump.

I had a problem like yours. Turns out it was the fuel pump in the tank going bad (low fuel pressure). pressure was down to 7 lbs.
I couldn't believe it gave me that much trouble. Sometimes I would have to start it 5-6 times before it would stay running!
I finally bought a fuel pressure tester and found the problem.
now it runs 13.5 lbs.
