Do you mean an 081 head? Why do you want to shave anything off. 9.3:1 is plenty of compression for a 305. if you want more it is cheaper and easier to go with a thinner head gasket.

You can use more that 9.3:1 on a 305. Mine is 9.54:1.

By the way the "801 is a 305 head almost Identical to the 601.

Oh I know. You can go as high as you want really. Once you get past 9.6:1 you do not want to use thin head gaskets.

How thin? I know of a few people who blew their .015's with 9.6:1. I would love to run a thin head gasket with someshaved heads but I am to leary.

It's called steel wafer gaskets like my 305 came with from the factory. They are very thin almost like the copper head gaskets.

I use the Fel-Pro 1094 .015" shim with ~10.6 compression and have had no problems.

1094 steel shim here 10:1, 6000 rpm shifts and scores of drag runs. No problems. Even driven through the mountains and that really put a load on the engine considering its not exactly a low end torque monster and its been fine.

I would go with S/R 305 over the 305 Vortecs. Its less of a hassel and they do the job. They only thing I recomend is that you get a vavle job done to them. The casting isnt that great. But once a 3-angle valve job is done they'll be ready roll. I have the S/R Torquers on my car (2.02 valves) and the guy who does my machine work said it was one of the worse castings he's ever seen. But they're still a great replacement head. They just need some messaging.

a 305 world head is hardly better than a stock 416 and ported 416s blow it out of the water. Considering youd save alot of money on the heads you could have them ported and all the machining you need or if you are like me you port them yourself with no prior experience and save even more money and gain more satisfaction when your car is almost in the 12s
