Bought a mint TBI firebird, need help with it

Hey guys, I just bought a 1989 WS6 formula that has been in storage in a guys garage for 3 years.

I put it on a flatbed and brought it home, once there I took off the fuel filter and pumped the tank dry, and put on a new filter. I also took the TBI injectors and housing off the manifold and cleaned it out. I just took the injector/FPR part off not the IAC and throttle body part. After filling it with fresh premium the car would start and if you quickly pumped the gas pedal it would rev to about 2K, but as soon as you stop pumping the gas it would die. I changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor also and it made no difference.

I am pretty sure that it is a fuel problem because when it was running it made no mechanical noises or smoke, and it actually starts up pretty quick but just won't stay running. I also took out the IAC and cleaned it out but that made no difference either.

I am new to TBI, having had a TPI car before, where could I hook up a fuel pressure gauge? Any ideas on what it could be? Thanks

Check you fuel pressure. Make sure your pump is ok.

You can check your fuel pressure on the feed line. The feed line should be in the same spot on the framerail as your TPI set-up.

The fuel line runs the same way as my TPI car, however my TPI car has a schrader valve to hook a gauge to, I havent seen one on the TBI car.

The car also pops back through the throttle body at times, with a small burst of flame. I know its not timing or anything because the car is 100% stock and ran fine when parked.

I'll remove the whole throttle body and clean it out. Can the injectors be dissassembled and cleaned out as well?

You will have to splice into the feed line to get an accurate measure. That is no big deal because you can get all the stuff including the gage for 30 bucks or so. You can clean your injectors but you should have them sent out and sonic cleaned. Just make sure there aren't any chuncks or anything in the screens or around the tip. Backfiring through the TBI is timing. I would check it anyways just to make sure. Be sure to un-plug the EST first.

i've heard of people cleaning the injectors. Really would also like to know how they did it.

My car was 100% stock too when i got it and the timing was advanced a couple degrees when i threw a light on it. i guess if its 15 years old stuff gets stretched out and advances itself.

check timing, make sure injectors are clean and one isnt putting out more than the other (different type of injectors somehow, or one isnt leaking, which could be an o-ring or in my case blown seal on an injector), and make sure u have a healthy fuel pressure. also might want to check alternator's operation and battery charge. if they both not at a healthy level there wont be enough power to keep fuel pump and/or injectors firing rite, especially after sitting for a while.

whatever you do don't rip them injector o rings. they are so hard to get it's not funny. the orings part stores have are too thick.. dealers don't carry them in stock they are all special order.. the only way to get the o rings is hope like hell the auto store has a set of injectors.. go buy the injectors for 60 bucks each and take the o rings from there and take the injectors back. and by the way the dealer wants 35 bucks for 4 o rings don't rip them things.

If you go to pep boys or autozone etc, the whole TBI rebuild kit is about 30 bucks. It has every O-ring, gasket, washer, filter etc. that you could need. I rebuilt the whole TBI last night and it doesnt leak at all.

there is an autozone.. and they didn't seem to have the right o rings. i work for midas and i called a whole bunch of places, autozone, advanced auto, sisco auto parts, napa, esw and 3 dealers.. nobody had them i ended up having to buy the whole injector kit.
