My new motor
Hey guys I just wanted to post a few pics of the 383 that I just finished building. I will be trying to get it in the car in the next few weeks and will keep you updated with all the pics as I take them.

But seriously though, will that air gap manifold fit under a stock hood?
P.S. - are those painted spark plugs I see?

Hey man, thanks. I am actually going to be getting an aftermarket hood. Just haven't decided which one. If you have any input on what's best go for it.
Thanks

What TBI unit and injectors are you going with? Are you ready to tune? It looks pretty none the less.
Got anymore specs on its guts?

Shifty,
Hey bud. Well as for the internals:
The crank rods and pistons are all forged. The compression was like 9.72:1 or something like that. I have it written down some where. I went with the iron vortecs basically because the money. I went with a comp cam that Brian from TBI chips recommended. I think that it has .464 lift on in. and ex. with a 114 degree separation. So nothing to crazy. Just your basic buildup.
As for the fuel setup. I was thinking of going with something similar to r90's setup. The walbro pump with the holley 670 with I believe 85lb injectors. Brian is going to help me with the chip because I dont' have a fu#@ing clue when it comes to chip burning. I really would like to learn but I find those articles kind of hard to follow.
I have a crane hi 6 that is going in with it.
Other than that I am up for suggestions. My goal is to get the entire setup in the car and tuned by the end of July. After that I am going to work on a nitrous set up. My suspension was the first thing I did followed by subframe connectors. I also have a six speed already installed behind the 305. I do need some help and suggestions with the rear though.
Gunny,
The spark plugs are old just there to keep paint out of the holes. LOL!!
Thanks,
Bill

Well you have a great selection of parts in that motor. It should be a torque monster and failry easy to tune. I can't wait to see some final numbers for that beast. Its not every day that you see big inch small block TBI motors out there.

Bron,
Hey man about the 12 bolt would you go with an aftermarket or one out of a junkyard?
I also have a Chevy 1500 that is running a really wild 355 with vortec heads and a five speed and broke the ring gear in that. It has a 8.5" rear. Do you think that the 12 bolt will last a lot better? Because I am wanting to replace the rear in my other truck too.
Thanks bro,
Bill

None of the stock 12 bolts will bolt up, main thing is the torque arm. You can either fab your own jig and weld all nessecary brackets or go aftermarket.

Wow! That's one sweet looking engine. But as far as the hood goes, I would either get the Cervini (sp?) 3" cowl or the GM Goodmark 2.5" cowl.

IROC,
Thanks for the compliments.
Deepstage69,
So you think that the best bet for me is to go aftermarket for ease of installing? What do you recommend for manufacturer?

IMO American Sports Car Design (one of our sponsors at top) make GREAT hoods. I'd check them out.

Teal91rs,
Hood looks nice on your car. Is there a weight savings on the aftermarket hoods?
Thanks
Bill
Does anybody have a pic of with the ss hood on?

Your gonna have fun getting enough fuel for that motor. Make sure you get the fuel pressure cranked up there pretty high before you do any WOT tuning. I'm running 22 psi and I'm pretty close to running out of fuel with my 300 hp 350. Your probably gonna need at least 28 to 30 psi. Some guys have bragged about running that all the time but I don't know of any personally that have. I don't think you'll have any problems with the pressure. Trying to tune this thing over the phone or by e-mail is gonna be tuff. I would have a carb and regulator standing by just in case you can't get it running well enough to break it in without washing the cylinder walls down with fuel.
By the way this will be one of the highest HP TBI setups I have seen so far not running a 4 barrel setup.

BMmonteSS,
Hey man what's up? I can't wait to get the motor in and running. I am stoked. Hey is there a good way to choose a fuel pressure to run the TBI at? Can the stock lines take that pressure? So the carb is a good back up plan until it is tuned huh?
Thanks for the info brother

holley with 85 lb injectors? is that a holley injector or holley 670 TB with GM injectors? i think it makes a difference! holley inj are 68 or so at higher pressure. GM are rated at 13 lbs FP. you need GM injectors IMHO in that holley. actually i would consider the holley 900 4 barell rather than the 670. with progressive secondary may run better. JMO.

There isn't really a good way to "choose" a fuel pressure. You just have to run what ever pressure is needed to get the right amount of fuel to the engine. Do a search for "how much HP will a 454 tbi support" and be prepared to get scared. You deffiently need the GM injectors the Holley ones are just 350 injectors rated at the higher (26 or 28) psi. You need to have he GM 85 pph at 30 psi, should be the equivelent to 150 pph a piece or around that. There is a formula to figure that out but I don't have it right off hand. Judging by your knowledge of TBI I highly suggest you go with a carb and then try to convert back over.
Knowledge is power, in this case litterally.

i thought i ordered the 90 lbs. in reality i have one step down. i think mine are 85 lbs. do a search and get the part # for 90's. maybe not that big a deal unless you are/have mega HP.

Ben73,
Hey bud what's up? I am open to sugestions. My only modding experience has been with carbs. I am new to up to date on the TBI set up.
What setup are you running? Engine, specs, TBI, Chips?
Thanks bro

First part of the equation is that I have 75 pph injectors, thats not much better than cop car injectors. Second thing is I have a good bit of room left to play right now. My guess is I could get to about where you are before I would max out these injectors. You could probably go further with 90 lbr. but then you have the air flow side of things to worry about. How many KPA does your engine drop off to on the top end. I'm droping from around 98 to 94 at around 6000. Which calculates out to about 1.3 inches of vacume. They say once your up to 1.5 you could make more power with a bigger TB.
