SES Code 32 & 44 !!??
Hey Guys,
Let me give you a breif history first. This is a 1991 RS with the TBI/auto drivetrain and about 120,000 miles. The car has been sitting for a year. And has only been started every 2-3 months. The car had a VERY BAD misfire which turned out that the wires had gone bad due to heat from the headers. Yesterday, I put on wires, plugs, distributor, cap, new oil, flushed the coolant, etc. I drove the car for about an hour and it ran GREAT!! Then all of a sudden I got an SES light. I ran the codes and got code 32 & 44. Code 32 is the EGR system & code 44 means that the car is running lean. I am hoping that the EGR system not working is causing the lean condition. Anyway, the EGR valve was replaced 2 years ago & moves when you push on it. If you push it when the car is running, the engine bogs down. Any ideas? Could it still be a faulty EGR valve, or mabey the EGR controll solenoid?
Thanks in Advance,
Mark B

I would run a vacuum test on the valve to make certian that it is opeing and closing properly. It sounds like it is not opening. It woulnd't suprise me if the valve was bad. Every GM vehicle that I have owend for the most part has always needed a new fuel pump and EGR valve at some point in its life.

I figured it out... The code 44 was from bad gas. The gas that was in the car was a year old and had fuel stabilizer in it. I ran thought that gas, filled it with some 93 Octane, and whola! I also replaced the EGR valve. No more SES light!!

I have read up on how to access the codes, but I am still unclear on how to decode them. Can someone explain in detail, how to differentiate the codes?

After you access the codes, the first one will be 12 (flash.....flash flash) and will do this three times and go to the next code if any. For example it is code 32 (flash flash flash.....flash flash) again it will flash this code three times and proceed on. If no other codes, it will repeat the cycle over and over until you pull the jumper wire.
