8746 guys..EProms...or EEPROMS??

You TBI tuning/buring guys on here......what are you guys using EPROMS or EEPROMS?

I understand the bennefits of swapping/converting to EEPROMS in these cars.......but I am a little leary of "carving up" my ECM by putting in that adapter I saw on Craig Moates site.

What have some of you guys done? Experiences/promblems/benefits?

Thanks....The TBI Prom tuning Rookie!

Dave

i run the old moates adaptor, that just fit into the stock plug, it is the 8way switchable version, i use the 29C256 chips. Trust me, it is well worth changing over to use EEPROMs.

Dewey...so when you say ithe old moates adapter just "fits into" the stock plug you mean it just "plugs" in...so no pulling/de-soldering the old one out and soldering a new one in. From the website it looks liek the adapter I was looking at gets soldered into the ECM....(something I want to avoid).

I am surprised this stuff is making more and more sense almost on a daily baisis...lol.

Thanks,
Dave

yes his old adaptor didn't require soldering, you just pulled the old chip, and put it in place. then there is a zif socket fitted onto the adaptor, that takes the 28pin 29c256 chips.

Well, I wouldnt call it 'carving up'. Jsut requires that you desolder the RN socket. Craig posted good instructions for doing so on his site. Youll have to purchase a low wattage fine point soldering iron, desoldering iron, and solder. Not a big investment and they always come in use for other things.

You can make one that jsut fits into the stock socket. Thats how I made my romless adapter for the ecm that doesnt go in the car. Although it falls out easily if its bumped real good and its hard to keep it in the stocket when removing the eeprom. These can be big problems for something being used in a car. Oh, and its also harder to solder up then actually desoldering the RN socket.

Not exactly an answer to the above -- but I use neither, . . . Invest in a Prominator, and never worry about erasing, emulating, or burning. As far as experiences -- Fun Fun Fun Fun, . . .Problems ? uhhh . . none. Benefits -- come on, how cool is a custom DFI setup for less than a few hundred bucks ?

desoldering the socket pins is a peice of cake, i used an adapter and ZIF socket i bought from Craig Moates. The finished part looks good and i havent had any problems with it, when you get done (like that ever happens) with making changes on the chip, you can opt to remove the zif socket and just plug the chip into the adapter.

Hit the ever so trendy and popular 'search button' and in the search menu search the thread titles with 'prominator' in the DIY-Prom board. Should bring up the thread over there on it. Shouldnt take too long to get the info

I've got one of these on order too. Should be really cool and you don't need to buy a programmer if you don't have one.
