Got headers and intake on

Well, we just finished up putting the headers, full exhaust, and Holley TBI intake on my car. Man it pulls real hard now, it doesn't struggle through the RPM band like it used to and it loves to rev now it seems.

It didn't like to idle to well though at first it would surge and occassionally die, so I hooked up Winaldl and it looks like its running pretty rich at idle whereas it used to be perfect AFR at idle. So even a change like this throws off the cal by a good amount. I don't have my Prominator yet (ordered over a month ago) so when I get that I'll be able to tune it right but for now I just upped the idle a little with the idle air screw and it idles solid.

Anyone wanting to put this intake on: I like it a lot so far it sounds good it has a nice big plenum but fits under the stock hood. Only a few things were a pain to install. There's only one source for vacuum in the back so I just T-ed it off, works fine. We made an extension for the stock throttle bracket because it was off by about an inch. We also had to extend the fuel lines a little because they hit the manifold where they were turning into the TBI. Other than that, it runs great. Thought I'd let you guys know.

Is it running richer at idle than it did before? I would think it would actually run leaner with the new exhaust/intake. Maybe if u bump up the timing a few degrees at idle it would help, especially cuz your rich there.

Timing is at 6* advanced, same as it was before. I would have thought it would run leaner too, but it showed rich. I don't want to advance timing anymore though because it already has a little ping on tip-in.

once you get your chip equipment, you can give it more timing at idle, and more fuel on tip-in, that should make it run just right.

That's what I'm waiting for; I'm pretty confident I can get it running perfect once the chip equipment comes. It just needs to get here now, and I need to find someone that likes to desolder and solder boards.

Man, it really pulls hard now though. I get a little wheel hop hitting second gear, its like a violent shift and then I can chirp them into 3rd gear, I love it.

I told ya you'd love that intake

Though it isn't a direct bolt on, I think the extra install time is definetely worth it over the edelbrock tbi performer.

I ran into the same idle problems when I installed it as well. the only difference I had were my 1.6 roller tip rockers. You guys hit it on the nose with timing and fuel on tip-in. That's basically what Brian did to my chip at the time, and it cleared the problem up. The intake and rockers made for a huge sotp difference as it was, but just wait until you tune her a little and regain the low end torque! Can't wait to see what you run at the track!

BTW, did you keep the egr?

Just wait until you do a cam, that is when things start to really get fun.

Good to hear that your idle did the same thing r90 so I know for sure I'll be able to clear it up easy. I kept the blockoff plate on the egr for now, I figure when emissions time comes around I'll pick up a new valve and get it working. I pulled all my smog pump and air tubes and everything out too.

Dewey, I was actually going to throw in the L98 cam I had but I figured maybe I'll wait until I got some heads for the motor and do both at the same time and go with a bigger cam as well. I can see what you mean though, it really feels like this engine has more potential than I thought it could have.

bron,

you said you haven't burned a chip, right? if that's correct and egr isn't turned off in the chip, i wonder if your lack of an egr valve could be what is causing your problems.

My car ran the exact same way when I put on my hedders and performer intake. See, these cars aren't so bad. You just have to replae everything on them to wake them up

sean,
I haven't burned a chip yet, I was wondering myself if the EGR may have something to do with it. Once I get the prominator I'll be able to take it out of the chip. It hasn't thrown any codes though so I'm thinking it's just from the big plenum volume mainly.

Yeah shifty they're not too bad. I plan on replacing everything on the motor eventually then it'll be a real motor ha. I really need some subframes though too with this convertible it flexes so much.

I'm also starting to think I might need a new tranny mount soon, because when I hit the throttle, the shifter rises up. It lifts everytime I hit the gas.

Yea you do. A lifting shifter is a :nono:. Looks like you need another 24 bucks and a trip to the auto store to complete your weekend project

Yeah it sure is looking that way. What do you think shifty, have you replaced yours? I don't know if I should just get a stock replacement or some kind of aftermarket mount. I haven't looked into it much.

Go with any aftermarket poly mount. Some stock replacment mounts have been known to fail in less than an hour Although I still have the stock on my RS I recently put an energy suspension poly one in my 95 Z. It is a super easy job and the mount will outlast the car. It is added inusrance down the road. You can get really good ones from spohn, BMR, and enrgy suspension. Since they are so cheap I didn't want to have to pay for shipping so I got one at pep boys.

Some of them can ride rough. I was afraid my ES one would after reading some posts on it but it ran just as smooth as the stocker. You will feel a bigger change in vibration when you use poly motor mounts.

Which is why I used OEM's on my motor mounts as well.
