What was GM thinking???

Well I myself have a 92 camaro RS that was a 305 TBI and Im not sure if Im missing something or what, but what was GM's goal with the 305 TBI? As we all know they arnt the most powerful motor seeing sever modification is needed to get them into the 14's, and I personally got horrible gas mileage with mine, although it was an A4. Im not dissing people with TBI or the car seeing as I owened one and loved it to death, just honestly wondering if anyone knows GM's goal. My RS is making a very good rebuild, and my only guess is they wanted a motor that wouldnt reek too much havock on the chassis so it would last longer??

TBI was budget minded performance. What I mean by that is insurance was cheap, it had a V8, and got great mileage. Your car should have seen 30mpg on the highway if it was in a good state of tune. I used to get 30-32 mpg when my car was stock. Plus, high 15's to low 16's in the late 80's was fairly fast. Not to mention that TBI was used in about every GM car of the time. It is no different than GM having multi port set-ups in every one of its lineup today. So, 15 years from now we may be saying "what was GM thinking".

Shifty is exactly right, and trust me when I say this has been beaten just about to death. Reader's Digest version: Easy way to sell a V8 sports car without having to put a whole lot of money into it.
