I have been thinking about taking my Throttle body off and cleaning it out and was wondering if anyone has every done it. It seems like it would be pretty simple but id like to know from someone with experience.

 

I did mine, took it off and did the ultimate throttle body mods (in the tech article) and used some carb cleaner, noticed some throttle response, mine was all gunked up.

Go to any auto parts store and get a TBI rebuild kit. Has all new gaskets other parts for your throttle body. Good idea if it's never been done...

Thanks alot for the info. I just called the Auto parts store and they told me the rebuild kit was $36.00. Does this sound right? They called it a injector kit or something.

 

Clean out all of the vacuum passages and such. Scrub the throttle spring and lube it well. Keep carb cleaner away from the IAC and TPS. If you do get it on the IAC, put a clean drop of oil on the pintle and spring.

 

Yep. Mine was full of gunk and got stuck open on an on ramp to 101 here in the Bay. Not pretty (and purty damn scarey!).

Yep, that's the right price. It's generally called "TBI Tune-up Kit" or something similar, but there's many different names for it, for some reason .

 

So, is a throttle body as complex as a carburator? In other words the TBI hard and take apart and get back together?

 

Not so complicated. Comes apart pretty easy. Recently cleaned mine. Disassembled, sandblasted the real bad parts, carefully, of course, and sprayed it down with carb cleaner. Cleaned up real good.

Also, if you change the injector filters, watch for the inlet filter. Its small and easy to miss.

 

I've never rebuilt a carb. before, but rebuilding the TBI unit is pretty easy, and fun! There's almost nothing to it. Just disassemble it, clean it, put on the new parts and bolt it back up. The kit comes with good instructions, too.

 

And if for some reason you forget which part goes where, everything does fall into place perdy easy. Good luck!

 

Ok, i just did mine today, there was nothing to it. I was worried when i put it back on that i might have forgot something or left something out, but she fired right up, and it runs great! Thanks for alll the help

 

Oh g&#248d no! As for anyone wanting to rebuild theirs, the only thing you need to make sure you do is to make sure the throttle blades find their way into the same bores tehy came out of.

 

I was thinking of doing this. My 88 has 134,000 miles and I'm sure no one has done this to it. I'm hoping it will run a lot better than what it is doing now. Any advice on tools needed or cleaners? How about replacing the injectors? Thanks.

 

Also, should I replaced the two sensors? IAC and ????

I don't know why folks take a TBI apart to CLEAN it. Everything that needs to be CLEANED can be accessed with the thing assembled.

Ripping it apart to replace screens, change the pressure regulator diaphragm, or to re-bush the throttle shaft is another matter.

Wild Guess: "Ultimate TBI Mods" are mostly a total waste of time. Thinning the throttle shaft and screws may yield some minor improvements on modified engines.

 

Kinda a old post on tbi but on your tpi the passages for the iac are large and don’t need much attention.
You can remove and clean the iac pintle and then set the minimum idle speed.
