LO3 vs LO5

i know i might be dwelling on this a little hard, but what could possibly cause a Stock 90 LO3/T5 who's only mod is a muffler to beat a 91 Vert LO5/700R4 with full catback and larger injectors... i think bruce's answer of "posession by the devil" is the most probable cause... does anyone else have any possible mechanical ideas??

Easy. The chip. The stock chip can barely handle a stock LO3 mo less an engine that makes more power and has 45 more cubes. Doing so will drastically kill performance. It is the same reason why most heads and cammed LO3's run slower than they did when stock. The heart of these cars is in the chip.

Dave,

Do some data logging and post the logs. Someone might be able to tell you what's up.

Wow....I knew you were unhappy about it, but didn't think it was THAT bad! You said you have that 350 chip still right? We should try both of em' when we go to firebird if it isn't too hard to change em'.

Are the cam specs on the LO5 really that lame? And then pile on swirl port heads....

One of my friends is a computer monster!! No life and computers. Its crazy, but when I talked to him about car tunning he told me that he can easily get over 400hp out a LT1camed 305!!! I belive we were talking stock everything but the cam!!!
If I were to make that horse power I would defenetly get some serious heads, but hey I belive every word this dude has to say!! Its some good stuff!!

You friend doesn't seem to know much about Thirdgens, does he? There is NO WAY that a LO3 could even remotly gain that much power with those crap heads. Heck, I don't even think 400 could be achieved with a cam AND nitrous...

The stock injectors and fuel pump will not feed 400 horses.

even the 90lph injectors would have a hard time feeding 400 hp. Definitely dont take this guy seriously. And stock heads with an lt1 cam wouldnt even be close to that. This reminds me of the guy i once knew that told me hes got a 1000hp supra. I asked him about his suspension and he said oh its bolted right to the frame

even though im sure my chip is a little off, i dont feel so bad anymore... bruce just has a posessed LO3... i went for an onramp shuffle with Geardrive after we left F-bird and i beat him to 60mph and i was on the outside of the lefthand corner... i waited for him to gun it and i still beat him... so, my LO5 isnt that bad... doesnt mean that 081's and an LT1 cam arent in its near future...

Dave,

The 081 heads are for a 305. The will work on a 350 but will increase compression. Was that your intent? The 350 tpi heads are 083's. They would probably work better on your 350.

Having the right ammount of fuel and spark for a motor will make all the difference in the world, even with a smogger LO5. Also, the only difference between those two motors is 45 cubic inches. Thats not too hard to make up with a 305 if its tuned in better. Also, those larger injectors may make things worse then better.

yeah, i want more compression. ppl ive talked to said that the 305 heads on a 350 works quite well, but ill take either set, they are still going to be a VAST improvement over my stockers... 81's or 83's will both do the trick, but since i plan on being all motor, no power adders, (nitrous/supercharge/turbo) i dont really see the need to stay at a low compression. i also had planned on getting the Vacuum Assisted Fuel Pressure Regulator for the TBI unit. One of the guys i met a LONG time ago has that done to his 350TBI and he loves it. I just really need to get what i want done, then get it tuned... i know tuning is a HUGE issue with my car...
