fuel problem someone help

ok today i replaced the fuel filter in the car, did nothing else except fuel filter. Replaced it with a cheap duetsch one from autozone. Anyways when i start the car, rpms jump up and down from about 200-500 for a min then it goes up to 1000 then eventually back down to 700-800 where it always used to idle at. Also if i get on it when i first starts up right after the idling problem and get on it you can smell a really strong gas smell. Is this the result of a bad fuel filter. Or would putting in backwards (fuel filter) cause this to happen. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Josh

I can't remember the symptoms of a fuel filter installed backwards, but I would definetely double-check that first before worrying about anything else.

found the problem WASNT the fuel filter. My map sensor somehow came unplugged, and found the problem after scanning it.
