truck vortecs worth my time/money?

a local guy is selling his '97 vortec truck motor for $200 complete, and needs a rebuild, aren't the stock truck ones prone to cracking and aren't as good as the aftermarket ones?

btw, i already have a set a decent l98s lying around if these heads aren't worth it.

Is it a 305 or 350?Those engines aren't too bad and 200 bucks isn't too bad either as long as there is not anthing wrong with it other than a rebuild.

There are certain castings to look out for and a quick search in the engine board should tell you which ones. You should be fine with the '97 ones. If I recall it was the early ones that had problems. I would buy that motor. You can re-use a lot of those parts and $200 is a nice steel. Even the cam isn't bad if it is used in a 305.
