How crucial is a forged bottom end?
I am planning a 383 TBI for my truck, 4x4 big tires etc, it will not be revving very high. Is a 4340 forged bottom end really worth the extra strength for the money? I baby this truck, and will never rev it high like the street guys. If the 4340 components are overkill, what should i shoot for instead? I am "hoping" 400hp/500tq....tops, very tops

NA at those power levels, its probably not needed. A set of properly detailed rods, with ARP hardware, and you should be fine. If it makes you sleep better, go forged, but unless you are spraying or cramming the air in, I wouldnt' worry about it. If you were planning on 500hp, and spinner her to 8k, it would be a diffrent story.

so in place of the 4340, what grade do you guys recommend? Obviously still want it to be solid, quality components, just not bank breaking.

Eagle cast stroker crank with one piece rear seal for your block. I would use cast pistons for that combo, along with a good 5.7" rod. I would go vortec 350 heads along with a vortec 350 cam or vette LT1 cam. Alot of marine engines as well as the old body style 1996 chevy van use TBI on a vortec engine so the intakes are around.
