Vortec or not?

About 5 to 6 years ago I had a rebuilt 305 TBI put in my truck and I wanted to know what the chances were of it being rebuilt with vortec heads? How can u tell the difference between stock heads and vortec heads. Also it no longer has A.I.R, there are holes in the exhaust manifold for it but it is not there, is that odd?

When motors are rebuilt they keep the stock heads. They just clean them up and install new parts into them. They won't replace them unless they are cracked or somehow seriously damaged. You can tell for sure by checking the casting numbers. www.mortec.com

I think the heads are new because I blew my old engine.

I bet they are your old ones. When you blow an engine the bottom end goes out. Whether it be a rod or a main bearing or whatever the heads don't typically fail. They are a hunk of iron. Only the parts bolted to them can fail. That is unless they cracked due to extreem heat which can occur. Just run the casting numbers to be sure. You only need to take off 4 valve cover bolts to see the casting #. If they replaced them with vortecs then they would have had to replace your intake with some sort of vortec TBI intake and fab up a new external EGR. A shop will not go through with that trouble because it osts too much and that woul dnot be a rebuild. They will rebuild the bottom end and replace the stuff in the heads. They will reuse most of the stock internals provided they spec out okay or your block didn;t need an overbore.

easiest way to tell is ot count the intake bolts, vortecs have 8 that are pointed strait up and down, and conventional heads have 12 that are angled in towards the center of the engine.

I'm gonna bet a shiny new penney they aren't vortecs.

I have not had time to check my casting number but i looked at my intake manifold and the intake bolts are going strait down. But i could not find all the intake bolts( did not spend very much time looking.) Please tell me if i was looking in the wrong spot, i am new to this. Are there 8 bolts on each side or 8 total? And i looked up my records on my rebuilt engine, it was put in in 1999 and none of the parts were reused off my old engine.

I am having camera problems right now, i will try and post pics of my intake bolts and engine later. Thx for your help!

Youd be more likely to win the lotery then for them to use vortecs on your motor

The heads are probably standard 305 heads, most likely the crappy stock ones or some equivelent.
