Can a GMPP 350HO/330 hp engine run properly with TBI?

Looking to find out what will be needed to get the 330 horse vortec headed 350 crate engine to run properly with TBI. Dyno tuning is a given but I'm more concerned about injector sizing, which TB unit(stock,454,Holley 670,blueprinted,etc.) to use. I'm not looking to build a high horse screamer here, just a car that makes good, useable power.

Yes it can be done and has been done. JPrevost went this route and I belive he used 65# injectors with the Holley 670. I could be wrong on that injector size. You will need to run an external EGR (if you need it) or have it taken care of in the chip. You will also need an EGR specific intake. The same procedures from any 305 to 350 TBI still apply.

i would do a search i know jprevost did this swap three or four years ago.. back when njspeeder still came on the boards..
when you do the search search for jprevost in the name section and you should get a bunch of information on all that you are looking for.

You may want to send him a PM. I am sure he would be more than happy to go into detail about his combo. If I recall he ran a best of 12.9.

Wishful thinking on the best ET, I might have the mph for it but my transmission has the final say.
It's a 13.6 to date at 104mph having to lift in the 2nd to 3rd shift (rather pathetic) and still getting 20 degrees of knock retard. Haven't been to the track since (working on the car some more ). You NEED to jack up the fuel pressure if you use the Holley 502-6 because it only has 65# injectors. With the stock fuel pressure you make about 240hp and no more, the injector go static and there just isn't enough fuel. I found a large heavy spring and installed it in my regulator for 28psi. It should be enough fuel flow for about 350hp, all I know is I've got enough fuel now .
Other than the fuel pressure you need a larger fuel pump, stock just won't cut it. And lastely, burn your own chips which will cost you less than $150. I can help with the chip burning technical question.
My latest tuning and code changes are feeling really good. This spring I'll take her to the track for some new bests .

Have you checked out Turbo City? The offer a complete line of TBI upgrades solely for Vortec equipped engines. Pricey but if they work..........

Are you going to go to National Trails? If so let me know and I would love to come watch you.

Where's National Trails at Shifty? BTW Jon, you are one of the beta testers for Tunerpro 4.0 right? Do you know what the progress on that is?

I'll probably go to National Trails but I'm still in NJ right now so most likely the new bests will come from either Englishtown (most likely not looking at how expensive they are), Atco (my favorite), or Island. I'm making a visit this spring BEFORE May 16th for a week to help the FSAE team so if the weather is good I might take her to National Trails. I also like dragway 42 which is a slightly longer drive from Columbus but it's where I've cut my best 60' times.

National Trails is just off 70 about a half hour East of Columbus.
Yeah I'm a beta tester but I've just been downloading the newest builds and testing them. There are still bugs but the xdf file format is killer. I've already got a $61 (that's for the 8746) xdf file made that I'm happy with. I have no idea when he'll release it but I hope soon.

Where exactly is dragway 42? I got so used to going to Trails since my parents house is 20 minutes away.

Yeah I hope he releases it soon too, I'm excited to see this.

As for the xdf format. Just out of curiousity, say I apply a patch or two that are out there to my .bin. I'm only assuming that the xdf/ecu would need to be altered to recognize the change. How easy is it going to be to edit this file format and allow for patches like that?

Dragway 42 is in West Salem not far off rt.71.
http://www.dragway42.com/ , come on, it's THAT easy to find out where it is .

The xdf file format is very easy to edit from within TunerPro. This was his major effort with this version. Yes the patchs change things and that's why I have different versions depending on the patchs applied. Really there are only 2 patchs that needed their own xdf file. The RPM limiter and the IAT extended table. It would be nice if I could program the xdf file to read the bin and know that it's patched to open the correct xdf file. Damn, one more project on my table, aaahhhhh, it'll be the death of me.

Jon, are you running the cam that came in that GMPP engine, or did you swap that out? The one that came in that engine is quite mild and those would be impressive times with such a cam even with a slipping tranny.

Thanks for the info Jon. I'm getting anxious now for 4.0. You're the man with the software, I had to take a C class and it just didn't take me very far with that stuff, never could really get into it. Thermodynamics, on the other hand, is a different story.

Thanks, I don't think it's terribly impressive but it's not TBI "limited" that's for sure. Once I get the tuning where I like it I might just do the old drag race setup for a couple months to see what she'll do. Right now the car is FAR from an optimal drag racing setup, big front sway bar, lowered, stiff springs/shocks, STB, full interior WITH sound deadening added and an expensive stereo system. So when it's all said and done with a good transmission there should be no reason I can't hit high 12's, just a matter of time.

JP, I just recently finished putting the Holley Stealth Ram on (sweet-talked the wife into it).... lemme know when you hit Englishtown, as it would be nice catching up with someone from TGO. I'll bring the cam.

Did I read you're sig right? 454 TPI (stealth ram?) If so, I'd love to meet up. I'm in the process of waiting for weather to warm up. I've got some body work that's been a priority for me but no heated garage for teh glass work keeps delaying the paint job. I hope to have her out and about no later than the end of April, that's my goal anyways.

I'm pretty sure it was you who responded to me a few months back, but yeah... after the home equity was finally approved, I got my hands on a Motown 454 small block. I installed the stock, but ported to the max, TPI system on it (but with larger injectors), and even with the stock L98 chip, she ran surprisingly well. She did however fall flat on her face above 4000 RPM.

I had an itch for the last two months though. At first I was going to go with the LT1 intake swap... but since the car was already inspected until late 2006, and after I sweet talked the wife into it, I decided 'what the heck', and opted for the HSR. Hopefully in the coming years though I'll be able to plumb the EGR valve into the header somehow.

Spring time's a'comin. It'll be here before you know it. To quote an emphatic Deniro from Goodfella's, "It's gonna be a good summer"....
