not sure where to post this but i figured someone here might know .....i want better heads than my crappy L03 heads it's a 305 so i don't want to waste alot of money i found some 416 86 tpi heads will these bolt on my 89 tbi? there is a difference between 82-86 and 87 and up heads, will i need to change the intake manifold? or will it just not work?

yes, the manifold is the part thats different, the earlier heads will also use different valve covers, other than that, you shouldnt have any problems..

You will have to bore out (oval out) the 4 center bolt holes on the manifold. This is so the 4 center bolts can lay back at the proper angle to get in the bolt holes in the heads. The 416 heads had the 4 center bolts holes at a 72* angle.

You can also use a pre-86 carb intake manifold with a tbi adapter plate. This will make your throttle cable just a tad short but you can fab up an adapter for the throttle body linkage. Several guys have done it.

I did the 416 head swap and used a new Edelbrock Performer TBI manifold. That was another can of worms. If I had to do it again, I think I would use a pre 86 intake with a throttle body adapter plate.

Bill,

Did you do anything to your valvetrian or did you reuse everything from your other heads. Some people switch to non self alligning when they go with 416's and install guide plates.

I put in 1.6 roller rockers. I can't remember if they were aligning for non self aligning.

The LT1 cam will need new valve springs if you use 1.6 rockers. If you use the stock 1.5 rockers you should be ok.

Even if you keep the stock valvetrian you need to change your valve springs to match the cam. It is a good idea to change the timing set as well.
