new tbi install (LONG)
Hey all. I just retrofitted my 79 malibu wagon to tbi. The engine is basically the vortec 330 motor, exept a bigger comp Fi cam, and 9.5:1 compression. It has a GMPP vortec intake, with an adapter to the tbi. I did the ultimate TBI mods. Adjustable FPR. A 2004r Tranny, stock converter (I know, need a bigger stall). A gm 7.5 rear, 3.73 gears. Retroffited f-body rear disks. Lowered with a belltech kit. I'm an ASE certified mechanic, so I had no problems with the install. I also have a snap-on MT 2500 scanner to see what the car is doing. I must say, it does start and run. But not very good. The prom that is in it is from a 87 K-5 blazer with a 350. Now my questions, would it be better to get a prom programmer and some blank eproms, or just get the prominator and do my tuning that way. I'm no stranger to computers, I have an A.A.S. in network engineering, but I can't get work in that field. lol. So I am a mechanic. I would just like to get started on the tuning to get it running better. It is pig rich at idle the it is gettting lean. The integrator on the scanner is saying about 108 to 112, telling me I'm rich, black smoke and all. No, I don't have a wideband. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx.

I recommend getting a programmer and a couple chips. This website is full of information. You don't need a wb but it would help. Just start running searches and check out the diy prom forum.

What he said, and look into the autoprom, it's a realtime emulater / chip burner / datalogger all in one. Very, very nice. If you can fight the urge to just change things till your blue in the face, and take your time along with taking good notes. The emulators are worth their weight in gold.

thanx for the replies. I was looking in to the autoprom. Looks like a ood deal. I just have to get the adapters? I am using a 7747 ECU. When I get a hang on the tuning, maybe I'll update to a different ECU. I also plan on putting my 150 horse N2O kit on it. My sleeper family truckster ( station wagon) hehe. Thanx again all. Any other remarks or advice are appreciated.

If you don't mind me asking.
What vehicle did you pull your tbi setup from?
I'm also looking to install a tbi system into my 80 camaro, and it should be very similar to your malibu.
Can you give me a few tips on what I need to get, and a list of what to do, like what wires I will need to take with the unit and how to wire it into my camaro.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I got my setup from an 87 chevy K-5 blazer. It was a freebee that was getting scrapped from my shop. The system went into a 79 mailibu wagon. I have vortec heads, so I got a GMPP vortec squareflange manifold and a TBI adapeter. I ran a new fuel line from my gas tank. I also bought a new gas tank and sumped it with a kit from compitition engineering. The original fuel line was used as a return. The fuel pump is a carter 5001, external. 195lph @ 22 psi. I did the ultimate TBI mods, have a vafpr. I have alldata, so i got the ecm harness schematic and picked all the wires out I needed. I used the small cap dist, no egr or A.I.R. system. I have a few schemetics of the wiring that goes from the ecm to the respective sensors/components. It's easier to get all the wiring and all from a truck because there is less stuff in the way IMO. The ecm is a 7747. Just bought all the stuff for PROM burning, but it's a steep learning curve. I shoulda played with it before I built the hopped engine. Oh well, live and learn I guess.
