mounting external ignition module

I am in the process of converting a large cap HEI to ecm controlled HEI for my TBI setup. I am using an 8 pin ignition module and was wondering if using some dielectric silicone grease (whatever it is called) and mounting it to the firewall would be enough, or should I mount it to some sort of CPU heat sink? TIA

It woudl be ok to externally mount it. But, the surface must be able to conduct a good deal of heat and also have a very good path to ground, or the module will malfunction/not work. Also make sure to keep wire runs as short as absolutly possible.

Is it possible to modify the dist. base and mount it internally?

To get it to fit internally would require a fair amount of cutting and the heat soak area on the ign module area would not be totally on the heat transfer pad in the dizzy - it would sit upside down on it.

Definatly would have to sit on the metal contact pad underneath. Itll have a meltdown, otherwise. Probably doesnt really matter in the long run where it goes so long as the wires arnt too long, it has a good ground, and can stay cool.

people used gm's 4 pins with a Ford duraspark distributor in their mustangs. They mounted the module to a heat sink and put it on the firewall
