Hypertech Thermomaster
Anyone here have a Hypertech Thermomaster Chip? I know Hypertech tends to get a bad wrap on thirdgen but I have the hypertech 160 stat and the 166/176 fan switch so the chip is made to go wioth that combo. I was gonna go without a chip but I think my car is running near warm up temp and the stock chip is dumping a lot of fuel to try to warm up the car. Anyway just wondering if any TBI people have this set up and if the chip makes a difference as far as fuel mileage(I know it wont make much diff w/ performance)

Yeah I should just do that, but I figured since the stat and fan are from hypertech and the chip is made to go with them it would be easier to just use the chip. All I really want it to do is to make it so the computer is adjusted for the new temp. I'm not that concerned about getting the A/F ratios just right for max performance. Also, I plan on keeping the car fairly stock only mods are Dynomax catback exhaust and K&N Air Filter.

I wouldnt bother with the hypertech chip. All they really do is change the closed loop enable temp. I dont think the chips are even available anymore.
Id also not use a real cold t-stat. The cooling system as a whole will tend to operate around 200 degrees or so in hot weather so it sort of defeats the purpose.

When your car is in open loop the ECM controls the motor with pre-set parameters. It doesn't take imput from any sensor. Therefore all signals are open. When the motor heats up and switches into closed loop it starts communicating (takes feedback) from all sensors and adjusts the running conditions of the motor.

The stock cooling system was designed to operate at around 200-230 deg. F. and reject the correct ammount of heat at those temp ranges. From what Ive seen, even with a low temp stat, the engine always likes to operate around those temps in hot weather.
I also wouldnt worry about it hurting the motor. Itll do fine at those temps and stay clean as long as you use good lubricants.

I think I'm gonna forget about the thermomaster because I tried today and I couldn't get the fan switch to unscrew from the block. I took it down to Pep Boys and they couldn't either even with a decent size breaker bar and soaking with PBBlaster and Liquid wrench. I am worried Ill strip the threads in the block. Instead I think I'm gonna go to a 170 stat and the Hayden Fan switch to turn the fan on at 185(Like in the Fan switch Tech Article) So I think Ill just go with stock PROM.
I dont think the chip you have would work cuz I have a 305 not a 350. The part number for the chip I would use is: 121372.
