roller rocker questions?
Hey guys i'm thinking about buying some 1.6 ratio full roller rockers as a cheap easy upgrade for my l03. So heres my few questions i had that i 'd appreciate info on:
1.) Will narrow body 1.6 ratio roller rockers still work with stock height valve covers?
2.) would i be able to also use them on my 1986 lg4 305?
3.)how do you actually set the lash on a l03 (sorry never done this before realy). I need to know how to set it with the intake manifold on and lifters in their bores. I do have an air compressor to if i need to do this as i expect i will.
4.) i plan to replace valve seals while i'm in their so what would you recommend as a good cheep valve seal (won't be running this engine but, for a few more months).
Thanks a lot for hte help in advance.

Ok well starting with the valve seals, I plan on tackling this very soon too. You will need the air compressor and fitting to fill the cylinder with air while you remove the springs, etc. I bought a set of Felpro valve seals and it was like $20 for intake and exhaust. Some people will tell you to just use two sets of intake seals on all valves (positive seals). I dont know which one I am going to try yet.
The narrow body roller rockers will work for your L03 as long as you get self aligning ones. Comp Cams has a very good set and summit lets you know if they are self aligning or not. I have some in my closet I am going to put on once I get the rest of the car up and going. For the LG4, I am not sure if the 86 was self aligning or not, I think it started in 87. If it is, then you can use the same self, if not then no.
To set the lash, at top dead center, you would tighten the nut until it starts to put the slightest tension on the pushrod and puts drag on it if you spin it. Then you would turn the nut 1/4 to 1/2 more. Some people will then go back and adjust them with the engine running by back the nuts off until the rattle, then tightening until the noise goes away, and then adding the 1/4 to 1/2. Hope some of this helps.

Make sure you're on the base circle of the cam when you set the lash. Other than that, his answers are correct. Both valves must be closed when you do it. Some do it at TDC, some adjust the intake valve when the exhaust is closing and the exhaust valve when the intake is opening. I use the latter method.

oh yes btw my 416 heads don't seem to have any guideplates so i'd have to assume the 1986 engine was also self aligning.
Ok so i guess i did know how to set valve valve lash like this (have done it once is all lol). Still 1 last question though, how do you know when the cam is on base circle (must be a dumb question but, my brain hurts from thinking lately lol).

You put the cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke...
or....
You use my method, which is adjusting the exhaust valve when the intake valve is open, then crank the engine over with a ratchet until the intake valve is just opening, and adjust the exhaust valve. This is called the "Exhaust closing, intake opening" method and I find it to be the easiest.
